Seems fair for both sides, but didn't realise he's almost 30.

Love the AAV, just wish it was a year or two shorter.

But the dude is an absolute beast of a player and a clutch playoff performer. The core is locked up...just need to find a way to keep Bennett.

They're in their window - get him signed, get a reasonable AAV, and worry about those last years later.

To me, non-core players should not be getting those longer term deals. The AAV is fair, but I just don't see players like him sustaining it through their duration. I don't think it's a bad contract, I just don't know if anyone else would be giving him an 8 year deal. More like 5 or 6 seems good unless they think he has significant upside left.

Dude scored 42 goals two years ago and 34 goals last year. Back-to-back 70-point seasons. I think he's a core player.

Not to mention he's almost PPG in the playoffs the last 3 seasons.

Is Verhaeghe underrated or something? Guy is a beast.

I definitely checked the date on the OP as I thought this was a bump. Weird.

I had that there are two Verhaeghe's look on my face when I first saw this.

Can't criticize the AAV and with a cup winning team still having core players in that winning age range you trade those later years for cap flexibility today.

That was not in the cards.

The choice was 8 years or he goes UFA.

Dude is an absolute monster on the ice and a clutch producer. There is no universe in which he's not a part of the Panthers' core.

I think i remember hearing it was already a done deal but they had to wait until opening day for contract reasons, but doesn't make much sense if its just an extension??

Barky, Chucky, Reinhart, Verhaeghe and Forsling are all together for at least the next four years now (although I'm sure Barkov and Tkachuk will be extended). All that's missing are new deals for Bennett and Ekblad. If they can get those two done, that's a hell of a core. Probably the best one in the league.

Bob, though. Sucks they had to let Stolarz go... they really need Knight to figure things out before Bob hands over his caseload.

We are in the early stages of these large 8 year deals being handed out regularly by teams. It's going to be interesting to see how things look by the end of the decade as there will be several teams with a lot of money tied up into mid-30 year old players. I get that the cap will go up coming out of the pandemic years but it's still going to be hard for teams with 3+ players making $$$$ in their mid-30's especially if they have declined sharply which will happen to some of these guys.

Hard for me to look at this as anything but a steal. People have talked forever about how the cap will go up and how seven million will be the new five. Well at the end of this deal it actually should be.

Even if by the end of this deal it will be viewed as $5 million today, how effective is he going to be in the last four years of the deal at the age of 36-40 years old making $5 million per season? Flames are paying Backlund $4.5 for the next two seasons but that only takes him to 37. How would you feel about him taking up $5 million of the Flames annual cap space from 37-40 years old? It's a good contract but nowhere near a steal IMO.

The 8 year deals for Bennett Reinhart and this one could get ugly for Florida down the road.

They got a steal with Tkachuk because it’s his prime year but they are getting into that stage where you have to think long about handing out long term high aav deals.
