The Coaches
Ryan Huska - Head Coach
Ryan Huska was named the franchise's 24th head coach on June 12. He had been an assistant coach with the Flames since 2018. Prior to coming to Calgary, Huska spent four seasons as head coach of the Flames affiliate team in the American Hockey League, the Stockon/Adirondack Heat.
Dan Lambert - Assistant Coach
Lambert is entering his first season on the Flames coaching staff.
Lambert started his coaching career as Ryan Huska's assistant coach with the Kelowna Rockets in the WHL. After three years as an assistant, he took over the reigns as head coach with the Rockets, winning the 2015 WHL Championship before falling to Oshawa in overtime of the Memorial Cup Finals. He jumped to the NHL as an assistant coach with the Buffalo Sabres the following year. He was the head coach with Rochester Americans in the AHL for one season followed by two seasons as the bench boss with the WHL's Spokane Chiefs. Dan spent the last four seasons as an assistant coach with the Nashville Predators before joining the Flames
Cail MacLean - Assistant Coach
Cail MacLean undertakes his first NHL coaching position following three seasons as the head coach of Calgary's AHL affiliate in Stockton.
During his time with the Heat, MacLean guided the team to a record of 72-65-16. The 2020-21 season marked MacLean's eighth season within the Flames organization, having served as an assistant coach with the Abbotsford Heat from 2011-2013, two seasons as the head coach with the ECHL Adirondack Thunder and one season as an assistant in Stockton prior to becoming Stockton's head coach in 2018-19. Prior to embarking on his coaching career, the native of Nova Scotia, had an 11-year, 747-game playing career in the AHL, IHL and ECHL.
Brad Larsen - Assistant Coach
Larsen joins the Flames coaching staff following nine seasons behind the bench with the Columbus Blue Jackets, the most recent two as head coach in the 2021-22 and 2022-23 campaigns. He would spend the prior seven seasons as an assistant coach before being named bench boss in June 2021.
News Roundup
Calgary Flames seek stability, progress and playoffs with younger roster
Rebuild, retool, revamp, pick your term. The Calgary Flames are a team in transition heading into the 2024-25 NHL season.
Winger Blake Coleman believes the Flames can use this season's low expectations as fuel.
Young players hungry to make a name for themselves in the league can inspire veterans to remarkable results, the 33-year-old said.
"There's very little expectation being placed on this team right now," Coleman said.
"It's an exciting way to play when there's no pressure, no expectations. Inside the room, we have a much different view of ourselves than outside."
Sam Honzek's terrific training camp earns him Calgary Flames roster spot
What a difference a year makes.
That was Sam Honzek’s first thought when he found out on Monday that he’d be sticking around with the Calgary Flames to start the season.
A year ago, the 19-year-old winger was injured leaving training camp and feeling pretty down as he headed back for another year in the WHL with the Vancouver Giants.
Ranking Calgary Flames players by their likelihood to be traded this season
This is going to be a very interesting year for the Calgary Flames, as they unofficially enter Year Two of what should be a sizable rebuild. The team made a number of moves last year, trading Noah Hanifin, Chris Tanev, Elias Lindholm, Tyler Toffoli, Jacob Markstrom, Andrew Mangiapane, and Nikita Zadorov in exchange for deals that included mostly draft picks, prospects, and young roster players.
This season should be more of the same, with the team likely to make even more moves to complement their prospect pool and draft picks.
Flames Would Be Making Mistake Extending Kuzmenko
Through his first 16 months as general manager of the Calgary Flames, Craig Conroy has received a passing grade from the fanbase. The 53-year-old, who came in at a difficult time, given the organization’s contract situations, has navigated the roster tremendously and has helped make the future look bright.
It’s hard to point out many, if any, mistakes Conroy has made since being promoted.
10 predictions for the 2024-25 Calgary Flames season
6. Flames finish 22nd or better in the standings
Maybe skip over this one if you’re a die-hard Flames fan…
If the Flames finish 22nd or higher in the standings, it means they’ll forfeit their own 2025 first-round pick to Montreal as part of the Sean Monahan trade.
Grading the Calgary Flames heading into 2024-25 NHL season
It’s not a rebuild, exactly, but it’s not far off.
Forwards: C
The Flames have a lot of draft picks coming in the next couple years, so they’ll be able to add good, solid young talent. It’s also not as if they don’t have some very good forwards on their team. Nazem Kadri led the team with 75 points last year, while Yegor Sharangovich led the team with 31 goals. Sharangovich is out week-to-week, so it will be on rookie Sam Honzek to fill his shoes on a line with Kadri and Andrei Kuzmenko – who can definitely fill the net, too.

I’ve liked the Conroy - Huska direction since it was introduced and the injection of youth inspite of tough ‘asset management’ decisions continues the Flames evolution. So many interesting story lines and underdogs to cheer for. Go Flames!!

what an epic game day thread to start the season! thanks Cheese!
We stole all their prospects last season from the Canucks. Might as well steal 2 points from them tonight.

We may not be a playoff team, but we have elite GDTs!
It's game day! It's always such a long, painful wait for that first one. And even though we will probably suck, I am (strangely) very excited for the season.
Let's Go Boys!

Now that the playoff matchup with the stinking Oilers is behind us, we can get back to the business of hating the no good Canucks...
I think they had a lot go right last year, and they had a crazy-high shooting percentage. I think they will take a big step backwards this year, offensively, and will not have the success most people are predicting. I think they will also struggle out of the gate, with Demko on the shelf. Having said all that, I think they will be more formidable in the playoffs than they were last year.
Also VAN is no good.

Let's hope we see the same Canucks team that imploded against the Oilers in their last NHL action.
Still can't believe I had to cheer for Vancouver in that series and suffer through their chokejob.

It's a hopeful season. I hope to see the kids take more of the reins. And maybe a star bubble up put of the crop.

Home opener. A couple BC kids reffing. Flames will be treated like the Washington Generals all year, at the best of times. I expect the boys will have two opponents tonight.
But that's fine - let the refs ensure our position in the standings. Maybe this year, it will serve us well.
