Devils sign RFA Mercer to three-year, $12M deal
https://www.tsn.ca/nhl/new-jersey-de...deal-1.2177020
Didn't see this posted anywhere but I figured Flames fans would have interest seeing how many here covet him. I think some Flames fans overvalue this guy but it's still a pretty good contract for the Devils.

Offer sheet of 4.58 would've obviously been matched. 6.85 was too rich of an acquisition cost

Don't have cap space for anything longer.
Everyone is signed, just need people to get healthy.

I think this contract illustrates what he is - some people were talking like he is some untouchable, $8M player.

Surprised it's 3 years for this low of a cap hit - would have expected a 1 or 2 year bridge.

Calgary could not offer more that $4.58 as it didn't have the draft picks for a higher bid.

At 8 years, the number would have been much higher. But certainly not $8M high.

When we traded Toffoli to NJ, I was disappointed, but I would've been pretty happy had we gotten Mercer. Little did I know how things would turn out.
Before the Sharngovich trade:
Mercer - 27G 29A 56P
Sharky - 13G 17A 30P
After the trade:
Mercer - 20G 13A 33P
Sharky - 31G 28A 59P
As far as the deal, I think Mercer's going to be a bargain throughout most of it.

I'd trade Sharky for Mercer straight. And I like Sharky. Mercer fits our time line better. But it's not a slam dunk decision though.

Maybe not 8, but it would be close.
Have a look at what Guenther just got, and he has much less experience and is a winger compared to Mercer being a C.
This is a hell of a deal IMO and this guy is exactly the kind of player the Flames are missing up front.

Good point.
Guenther is being used as a 1st line winger , and started producing hugely at the end of the season. I'm sure Utah did this as they know his usage will remain premium.
Mercer's usage is a little more unclear.

Mercer was almost exclusively a winger last year.

He got 3 X $4M.
Comparing that to 8 X $8M implies that he would expect 5X $10.4M for his next deal. That's quite a raise.
Absolutely no way he takes 3X $4M if anything anywhere remotely close to 8 X $8M was on the table for a long term deal.
I would suspect that the number on the table for 8 years would have been more like $6M. Even that requires him to get $7.2M for the next 5 (which sounds more in line with this contract).

I don't think anyone thought he was untouchable, just untouchable for Markstrom.
