Any inside info? This guy good. Conroy seemed to be fan of the late snow. Credited him with sharangovich trade.

Cool. That actually seems like it would jive with what appears to be Conroy's ethos of trusting his Management and Scouting teams.

Never heard of this guy, but this team is going to need a lot of strategy to accommodate for a stunning lack of talent, so he's got his work cut out for him.

In the early 90s, when ever kid in Canada was into hockey cards, I got a maddeningly frequent amount of Kerry Huffman as a Nordique cards in the packs. Must've had like 9 of them. It's the only reason I remember this guy. That and his name is sorta funny.

Part of the big Eric Lindros trade back in the day.

Sounds like his job is to decipher analytics for the other scouts, so that they can key in on certain aspects in their assignments.

Huffman’s claim to fame was being part of the Lindros trade.

Edit: Reggie beat me to it.

It is interesting seeing a former player so immersed in analytics. Not the typical background.

Peter Forsberg was a prospect included in that trade. I would have rather had Forsberg on my team than Lindros not to mention all the other assets traded to Quebec/Colorado. That trade helped Colorado win Stanley Cups in 1996 and 2001. Beware putting too much stock in analytics.

So, he joined Pittsburgh's scouting team in the summer of 2021 until he was fired in June of 2023. Looking at the Pens trade history from 2021-2023 would give some insight into his work.

He was literally part of the trade as a player - not that he made the trade on the basis of analytics or anything.

1992-Jun-30 Traded (Kerry Huffman) from Philadelphia Flyers with Steve Duchesne, Peter Forsberg, Ron Hextall, Mike Ricci, Chris Simon, future considerations, round 1 pick in the 1993 draft, round 1 pick in the 1994 draft and cash to Quebec Nordiques for Eric Lindros

At what level was he part of their scouting team? Pro level or amateur? Head of scouting or assigned to scout certain areas?

Scouts find players and make recommendations but the GMs make the trade. We never hear what scouts think about players. I don't think we can get any insights of his work by looking at the Pens trade history from when he was there.

Is Director of Hockey Strategy a new role? I can't say I heard of it before.

Wikipedia isn't clear on what role he took when joining the Pens, but mentions that when he left, he was in the position of Director of Pro Scouting.

Maybe it's just me, but it would be nice to hire a guy for the advanced statistics department who actually has a degree in the field of statistics every once in a while.

My mistake. Forgot he was a player at the time not in management.

Three other clubs have a Director of Hockey Strategy, believe the Sabres were the first.

Dallas Stars Steve Greeley: will oversee the club’s scouting and analytics initiatives, and its application to evaluating player personnel decisions at both the amateur and professional levels.

Seattle Kraken Alexandra Mandrycky (just promoted to assistant GM): her group facilitate the use of data and technology throughout the Hockey Operations department

Buffalo Sabres Sam Ventura: Sam now leads their data science team as the vice president of hockey strategy and research. His analysis informs player evaluation, team performance, trades and the draft — and anything else that helps the team win games. He’s also leveraging tools such as computer vision and RFID tracking to quantify what happens on the ice at each moment in time.

They certainly look like nerds, but any way to see their actual credentials?
