2024/25 Calgary Flames roster discussion
After a fantastic draft and a very tidy first day of UFA a good portion of the roster has taken shape though there likely is still lots to be decided before opening night; Let’s have a look at where we sit currently!
Huberdeau - Sharangovich- Mantha
Zary - Kadri - Kuzmenko
Pelletier - Backlund - Coleman
Lomberg - Pospisil - Coronato
Hunt - Rooney - Duehr
Weegar - Andersson
Bean - Miromanov
Bahl - Pachal
Hanley
Vladar
Wolf
Cooley
What are your thoughts on the roster so far at this point early into the offseason? Who are some prospects you think could push for spots?

I'm honestly just looking forward to seeing a few of these guys take big steps forward even in a down year. I want to see how Sharangovich, Pelletier, Zary, Posposil, Miromanov and Wolf develop and grow over the season. Getting excited to see some home-grown talent begin to break through.

I honestly think people are going to be surprised at how competitive we will be next year.
It's always the years we think we will be bad where the Flames show up.

I suspect neither Hunt nor Duehr make the opening night roster, and I can see Hanley being pushed out. Coronato will have to have a really strong camp to avoid another stint with the Wranglers.
I think Klapka and Solovyov probably have the best chance of promotion at this point.

I think so too.
I smell another 2014/15 type season coming up.
I think they'll be a pain in the ass to play against if they get any kind of decent goaltending.

Conny’s been killing it. After watching Tre’s decisions in Toronto, I couldn’t be happier with our GM. I even believe that if the team has a surprise year where they’re competing for a playoff spot late in the season, Craig won’t do an immediate about face and starting trying to win-now like BT did in 2014/15.

Well I agree we wont be a walk over, but we will get walked on. Thats all I ask for anyway. If you dont show up you lose, if you do show up you win but get roughed up in the process.

I think it’s a waste to put Sharangovich at centre - he’s better on the wing.
Zayne Parekh could force his way onto this roster. It is insane how good he is, and if they think he can hold up to an NHL season, he’ll stay.

Waive Hanley down to the AHL or carry 8 D if you are worried. Given their respective ages, I think it would be an unnecessary risk to waive Solovyov as he is waiver eligible this season. He is either the 6th or 7th. I think he has more upside than Pachal, but he is a LD. Either way, the Flames try to keep both Pachal and Solovyov over Hanley.
Flames just brought in Lomberg, so my assumption is that they want a bit more jam to their game. Lomberg - Pospisil - Klapka would give opposing teams fits, especially since they can all skate. I think it is a bit of a waste as I would prefer to have these three spread over 3 different lines, but if you do that, then I would rather Pelletier get a shot on one of the top 9 lines instead. Lomberg is a 4th liner, Pospisil is a middle 6, and I think Klapka would perhaps look good alongside Coleman and Backlund (maybe not right away, but at some point) as I think his skating, reach and physicality can make for a great checker. Nice to have options.
There is still Rooney and Pelletier, and I think Stromgren has the skating and physical ability to get a long look too.
If you listen to Conroy and think that both Pospisil and Zary should be centres, then things become more complicated:
Huberdeau - Kadri - Mantha
Sharangovich - Zary - Kuzmenko
Coleman - Backlund - Coronato
Lomberg - Pospisil - Klapka
Pelletier
I have trouble fitting Pelletier into the lineup, without just switching him for Coronato, and without putting him on the 4th line. However, he is waiver eligible too.
The big thing for me is avoiding throwing assets away for free. Pelletier and Solovyov are assets. Duehr is too, but to a lesser extent for me. Hanley, Schwindt, Bishop - you don't want to lose them, but there really is a very, very low chance any of these get claimed.
Just too many bodies. This is a full team already, and if the Flames make additional signings, they will be exposing additional players to waivers. I do expect them to make further moves this off-season - bad contract coming their way to eat, or picking someone off waivers before the start of the season. There will be good players available on the waiver wire as there are every year - good young players who may be buried that teams want to sneak through. I would like the Flames to be able to pick one off as it is just a nice free asset that is young and who you can insert into a rebuilding lineup and see if there is more there with a bit of runway.
Unless they catch lightning in a bottle, this is a bottom 3 team. Every other bottom team is getting better too, so the Flames will be right in the thick of it this year. I don't think there will be any really terrible this year like we have seen in the last few. It is the Flames getting worse than last season, while everyone else is getting worse. You have to look up at Washington and the Pens to see teams that are going to be worsening this season over last, and they will not catch the Flames.
Good work done today by Conroy. Got a decent player to play for the farm and help guys like Honzek develop, as well as getting guys who are just good enough to stabilize the team and keep the culture going. This won't be a boring team to watch. More size and toughness in the lineup too over last year which is really good to see too.

If Wolf even plays up to 80% of what he has done in his past leagues we are making the playoffs.

That defense nowhere near playoff caliber.
I think they’ll be entertaining, if nothing else.

I think it would be madness to keep Parekh in the NHL next year. This team is well positioned to tank and rather he play for Canada at the world juniors and defend his memorial cup rather than be on this tire fire of a team and burning a year off his contract. Let guys like Solovyov, Kuznetzov, Poirier get some games at the NHL level. Slow cook these prospects and I am sure Parekh will be on the team in 25/26 perhaps with another top prospect if they pick in the top 3 next year.

We just got 9th last, we need to get at least 10th last or we lose our pick to Montreal.

This isn’t a playoff team. After the top pairing our defence is going to be shredded and Vladar is coming off hip surgery.
They are going to test players up the middle we have no real #1C.
I’m sure they will compete and come up short.
If the team starts getting shelled I hope they go with Vladar in net and have Wolf as the backup.
