Default Buckshot Ron Barge Passes at 87

Mods—please move to Off Topic if better suited, but thought I’d share this here because he was a fixture at Flames games.

We’d often see him sit down by the glass during pre-game warm-ups, watching in the Flames end, then make his way back to his seats.

Sad day for us born-and-raised Calgarians. Godspeed, Mr. Barge.

There is a thread in OT, but...its Buckshot! The People must know!

And as a Born and Raised Calgarian? Give him his day.

I wonder how many here were either on the show or on the opposite side, never even heard of the guy.

I was there in 73 iirc.

Great question! Would be interesting to know…

My sister was on it with a choir group or something, sometime in the late 80s or early 90s.

I guess I missed that—did look but probably “man-looked”…

And as I said elsewhere, I watched his show as a kid, I grew up with it and he seemed like he really just embodied that spirit of Calgary, he was stand-up guy and he loved his job, he loved the kids that loved his show and he loved this City.

I know its 'Oiler-esque' but I do hope the Flames honor him this season. He loved this team and this City and he's a part of our Heritage.

Last week was my birthday, and like every year, I had the Beatles birthday song playing in my head all day. As an August birthday, I never got to hear Benny read my name on my birthday because they took the summers off, but I did win one of their gifts from Santa when I was 4 or 5.

From everything I've ever heard from people who knew him, he was as nice a person in real life as he was on camera.

RIP Buck Shot.

I know that my mother was on the show around 1970. She says it was a fun time.

I was on the show for my birthday when I turned 4 and 7.

Nothing could prepare 4 year old me for the excitement of Benny the bear popping out of his box. McDonald’s would deliver cheeseburgers and orange drink for everyone. It was awesome!

He would interview kids on the birthday shows and I remember he was asking everyone “do you have a favourite hockey player?” My 4 year old answer - “Calgary”. Buckshot loved that answer! Huge Flames fan and a staple of many lunch hours and kids days at the Stampede.

Loved by many and even though he hasn’t been on tv for several decades he left a mark on many! RIP.

I remember feeling like I had won the lottery when Buckshot and Benny read my name on my 5th birthday.

RIP, and thanks for the fond childhood memories.

I just discovered that the show's theme song actually had a name - the Elephant Never Forgets.

Crank it up for The Man:

My brother was on the Buckshot birthday show. He was so excited beforehand, and the experience surpassed his anticipation.

Ron Barge came exactly as advertised, a wonderful and caring man - a true Calgary legend.

RIP

Oh my God...so many memories of McDonald's 'Orange Drink.'

Bottle Drives, BBQs...they should sell that stuff in Juice Boxes. I'd buy it.

"Is it Orange Juice?" No. Not really. It is technically orange, in colour, but I wouldnt bet that any actual Oranges were harmed in it's creation.

He coached Pee Wee hockey too. I remember a game when the other kids pointed out him on the bench.

He came out and did the customary post-game handshake, so I shook his hand and was in awe.
