So, 2 years... he's 25... does he stay RFA after the deal expires?

Takes him straight to UFA and no trade protections.
Buys both sides two years to figure out if they want to continue this relationship or not.

Them shopping Necas would indicate that they aren't completely sold on him, so this deal makes sense for Carolina. Unless he blows up at which point, they'll need to pony up at the end of the deal.

Ehh...not sure I love that for Carolina.
If you didn't like the value you could get in a trade return when you were shopping him with RFA status...are teams really going to pay more now for a guy that can be a UFA in 2 years now with this deal.
To me it's either trade him now for whatever the best package is, or you have to try to get a 4+ year extension, a 2 year extension that walks him to UFA feels like the worst possible outcome.

They missed on every big UFA and no one was willing to pay their ridiculous expectations for Necas and at the same time, no one was willing to put an offersheet worth signing out there for Necas.
Whether they are inlove with him or not, they were eachother's best option

This is a bad decision.
He's hard to trade now because he has no reason to discuss extensions, and next summer he can ask for the moon or walk to free agency.
Don't like this for the Canes.

He was already hard to trade. They'd been trying to move him since they were eliminated.

Not sure what Carolina was expecting for a return, but you're not getting a huge package for a 50 point winger.

Kicking the can down the road and maintaining flexibility.
Not bad for player, not bad for team.

I don't think the issue isn't that you won't get a "huge" return. Some of the offers they apparently got were massive considering Martin Necas career totals and highs.
But, to give you an idea, from Vancouver they apparently wanted Hoglander, Lekkerimaki and picks. It's just not going to happen.

He's very easy to trade as plenty of players are moved with a year or two left on their contract. It's just that the Canes will have to adjust their ask accordingly as he would have fetched more as an RFA where the team trading for him would have had the opportunity to lock him up longer.

So instead they will either move him for rental value or will let him walk for nothing!

Or re-sign him long term.
It's Carolina we know he's going to walk, but there are more than two options!

That's because he has been asking for a trade for two years now. I doubt he finishes this deal there, this just extends the timeline a little.

If they didn't trade him now, I doubt they trade him at all now. Carolina has walked players to free agency before.

I bet they do the same for Jarvis now too and both the contracts will give them flexibility for the next 2 years. This deal doesn't increase Necas trade value, but it does set them up to be very good over the next 2 years. Next year they have Burns and Orlov off the books too. If Nikishin comes over, I see them being at their best next year. Nice to keep players on a value contract even if it is short term when you are a top team in the league

That and the arbitration hearing was coming up soon. Necas earned the right to walk at the end of the upcoming season or the one after that.
Necas needs to put his big boy pants on and perform. He's only hurting himself in the long run.
