Icon37 Shane Pinto suspended 41 games for violating NHL's sports wagering rules

https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article...ambling-rules/

Quote:
The NHL will suspend unsigned Ottawa Senators centre Shane Pinto 41 games on Wednesday for violating league gambling rules, multiple sources told Sportsnet.

Critically, the league did not accuse of Pinto of wagering on NHL games, as a memo sent in March 2022 reminded all league and club personnel — including players — that wagering on any NHL game, even where legal, is “absolutely prohibited,” and will “constitute conduct that is dishonourable, prejudicial to, or against the welfare of the League or the game of hockey” under the NHL’s constitution.

The memo added that NHL commissioner Gary Bettman is authorized to “discipline individuals determined to have engaged in improper gambling activities in any or all of the following respects:” expulsion or suspension a definite or indefinite period; cancelling any contract that such individual may have; and/or by imposing a fine. “The League will act swiftly and aggressively in penalizing any League or Club personnel determined to have engaged in acts in violation of the NHL Gambling Policy,” the policy states.

The exact timeline is unclear at this point, but it’s believed the investigation — which began sometime during the summer — intensified over the past few weeks. All negotiations to sign him were paused as the NHL conducted a recent hearing into the matter.

Exactly what Pinto did is unknown at this time. But there are situations where leagues have punished players who did not bet on their sport. One example: In June, Tennessee Titans lineman Nicholas Petit-Frere was suspended six games for placing a legal bet at the team’s facility, which is not allowed under NFL rules.

The next question is how the Senators will handle the situation. It’s believed that one reason Pinto has not asked for a trade is that he appreciates the organization’s secrecy about the investigation.

Well, that's not going to help his contract negotiations.

there are more and more of those cases in sports. The NFL has been dishing out suspensions for sports betting, and there's several soccer players who have been hit with this lately (Sandro Tonali being the most recent and probably the most well-known player).

#### sports betting in general. There's just nothing positive about it.

I think that online betting among athlete's is an epidemic. Call me crazy, it seems too easy to get away with.

It almost seems kinda hypocritical with how much the league is promoting betting/gambling these days. Shoving it down our throats 24/7, yet they lash out when. Players themselves bet. I obviously understand the reason for the suspension... It's more of an observation.

And when you factor in how much online betting spends on advertising in pro sports, you have to go hmm...

So the same league that has star players advertising for sports betting, suspends a player (who wasn’t even playing) for sports betting?

The hypocrisy is off the charts.

These leagues are marketing gambling addiction to viewers, then coming down hard on players with gambling issues?
This is like your drug dealer reprimanding you for drug use.

Why the hell can't these professional athletes bet on sports outside of their own?

It's ridiculous.

The owners should be happy about this that their players are giving some of the revenue back to them.

If it’s true Ottawa rescinded all their contract offers, will be interesting to see if someone low balls an offer sheet to force their hand or get a steal of a deal.

Athlete's gambling on games is an existential crisis worse than PEDs.
It could crumble the integrity of the sport.

Wheel of Justice at it again... punishment does not fit the crime and hypocrisy is strong with this as others have stated.
