I love that we went with Mantha, rather than Duclair to find Huby some help.

Conroy on Fan960 right now.

- Conroy still talking about looking for trades for players in the same age range as Bahl (23)
- Says Lomberg is excited to be here, Lomberg: "I am a Calgary Flame"
- Speaking on the goalies, he wants all three guys to come to camp and earn their jobs (Vladar, Wolf, Cooley), they expect one of them to come in and take the job
- Hard to trade away people you like, but reiterates he can't let guys walk away like in the past (cites Gio, Brodie, Gaudreau), says "oh, well our offers were a little bit better than what they signed today", felt comfortable in what they offered last year's UFAs, but had to trade 'em as they didn't sign
- Really excited about the skill brought in via draft, and it's why they stuck to shorter deals today
- Hasn't spoken to Huska yet, but says Bean is going to get a great opportuinity here, cites Pachal, Hanley, and Bahl as being part of a really competitive camp
- Salim with a lame "what stage are we in here...", Conroy says "we're re-tooling...we're bringing in young guys to compete" and expects to see more internal competition
- Flames will be a player in UFA, when the time is right, and the time is not right
- On Kadri rumours, believes we need guys like him to help us stay competitive
- Back to Bean, talks about how excited Bean is and that his mom and dad will be here every night, so is excited to see what he can do
- Emphasizes organizational flexibility if the right trade opportunity comes up (does mention players and picks as pieces that could be in them, before saying he doesn't have a crystal ball)
- Conroy says he has to buy Sharangovich some Lego, before the media says he can pay for his own now
- Sharangovich wanted to be here, is excited to be here
- Francis brings up Conroy talking about his 3-5 year plan at the draft, Conroy says the 3-5 year window is about building to being a playoff team, would love it to be a 1-3 year, but it takes time, and once you become a playoff team then it's about continuing to build to win a Championship, says we have to be patient

*ComixZone pause*

Patience?! YES!

*/ComixZone pause*

- we're growing, there will be mistakes and pain
- gushes over Backlund
- "Kuzmenko negotiation this summer?" nope, doesn't sound like it - they want to get into camp and see where things go, but the Flames are always open
- if we're trading young assets (picks), it has to be the right age coming back
- definite focus on younger assets/players
- Lomberg is fearless, a great person, lots of people know him (from here, from Florida), Lomberg is a tone setter
- Martin Frk wanted to be in Calgary, can be an option to come up if we have players in the top-6 go do, Frk is a big gym guy, stresses the desire to be in Calgary, Frk's wife is from Calgary
- Flames signed Justin Kirkland and someone else I forgot to come out soon.

/media availability over

Conroy now on the 960 with Pat:

- had a terrible commute back from Vegas, ended up in Abbotsford and drove from there, this is why the draft is going remote they joke
- very happy with the guys they got today, filled some holes, it was all about keeping term short/flexibility while filling those holes
- where we are today (in the building process), patience was importance, longterm made no sense for the Flames so they didn't do it
- "we have a plan, and we have to stick to it" with a focus on not blocking young players from earning roster spots
- loves the looming competition in net, no 'annointed' #1, someone has to earn it
- targeted Mantha to give Mantha a really good spot so that he could get a 'reset' and have a better season (while saying last season was good for him), hopes some chemistry clicks and he helps the PP
- Mantha: big man, great shot, put him in the right spot and he should score goals, he's excited to be in Calgary (naturally)
- cites Mantha's shot as a good reason why he's hopeful of chemistry with Huby (who says is a great passer), still have to see where the coach puts players, but he hopes to see it in camp
- speaks again that Bean will get a good opportunity here, talks about his ability to make an impact on PP (if Huska puts him there)
- reiterates Lomberg's excitement
- excited about Cooley, goalie scouts believe there is big, big upside with him
- the door is not closed completely on Oliver Kylington

Yeah, you need patience which historically Flames GMs didn't have. Doing something now, could have an opportunity cost later. So if it isn't ideal, don't do it. The right moves will present themselves in time.

The pessimist in me thinks...when Kylington wanted to test Free Agency a lot of Goodwill may have evaporated.

I dont know anything, but if that was me and an employee? I'd probably feel a little hurt.

Besides, the day is almost done and nobody is bashing his door down.

I know we just signed Bean, but I would still love to see one of Brannstrom or Boqvist picked up. I think they have a lot of upside and are still young.

This restraint on July 1st is something I’ve never experienced as a Flames fan in 20 years. It’s refreshing.

Conroy needs to go sign Broberg to an offer sheet.

He seems to be pretty solid on the bit about building from the net out. He has Wolf (and all the goalies in Russia) and eleventy billion defencemen already in the system. Next stop: centre.

I’m admittedly not a huge Klyington fan based on his on ice performance and risk factor. He chose to play quasi-hard ball (as is his right as a UFA) so if he circles back on the Flames I would expect that they would do the same based on what the larger market has shown. Will be interesting to watch.

Seattle might need to move Gourde to free up some cap room.

Conroy should give Francis a call.
