Panthers are scaring me a bit. They have lost some pieces on the backend and Schmidt isn't that good.

He's not that bad at all.

He's nowhere near good enough for the Jets to pay him $6 million. At $800,000 he's a bargain, and it's not like the term is a problem either.
Worst case, the Panthers bury Schmidt in the minors and acquire someone else.

Panthers look pretty good again this year. Pretty good offseason given what they had to deal with.

I think they will take a step back, but I wouldn’t worry about their 1st being a lottery pick.

I’d think Kylington is a better option personally.

Nate Schmidt is a better defenceman than Kylington. Also, I doubt Kylington signs a one year 800K deal. Schmidt is a perfectly acceptable 5/6 dman (which is what he will be in Florida).

I thought that last year when they were filling out the d corps with OEL, Kulikov retread, and someone named Uvis Balinskis. Everything worked out okay.

In the unlikely scenario that FLA misses the playoffs I would just offer them a late 2nd and their 2026 1st for their 2025 1st. Which would be a whole lot better than giving MTL Calgary's pick.

Schmidt is signed as a spared 6th/7th dman. He’ll be fine for that.
The biggest risk on the Panthers is Bob. As long as he is still motivated, they will be fine.
Panthers GM knows what he is doing with picking up reclamation

I never really thought about this but I wonder how that would flow if Calgary buys Florida's 1st no matter what. Would the original trade flow happen anyways lol

Then he won't be playing in the NHL.

Ekman Larsson was never a bad player though just severely overpaid in Vancouver and resulting in the buyout. At the price point he was at last year every single team in the league would want him on their roster. The loss of half of their top 4 is a significant loss.
I think that the Panthers will be a good team that will struggle with defensive depth and likely be trying to sell futures for defense at the deadline.
