Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking 2024 - Setting the List
Same process as previous years ...
Lets hash out the list to go to vote through the weekend, and I'll launch round one on Monday.
Deleted the obvious deletions (40+ year old Russians), and struck the ones I see off logically.
Debate about goalie age, etc.

Did Aspirot sign an NHL/2way deal or an AHL deal?
(not that I think he'll rank high here but out of curiosity)

CapFriendly had Wolf and Pelletier on the team and Coronato in the system.
Zary has to be considered promoted.

I don't consider Coronato or Wolf as prospects myself. They have graduated.

I don't think Koumontzis or Boltmann should be on the list but the rest seem good to me. I know know if anyone knows enough about the goalies to compare them to the skaters outside of Wolf so I'd be tempted to put them in a separate group. I tend to think of goalies like pitchers in baseball. There is a saying that there is no such thing as a pitching prospect due to their massive attrition due to injuries or ineffectiveness. I feel goalies are basically the same as you don't know you have one until you do.

I think Wolf should still be in there.

This is why age is a better way to go. I would like to rank all of the young players in the system

Its 70 days until training camp.
The more we include the better.

I'd say Wolf is debatable, but Coronato? I don't think so. He's had a taste, but I'd call his spot at the NHL level far from a sure thing.
I'd probably list both as prospects for these purposes.

Part of me feels like to simplify going forward we should just always do it by age.
Best players 23 and under or something like that...I always find more value in those lists than the lists that try to define prospects as graduated or not and it leads to inconsistency.
(I know this would break the historical list standard but to me feels like it's the better way)

Should Cooley be considered a prospect still? Seems like a weird outlier.

I would remove Cooley (27, more of an AHL body) & Koumontzis (unsigned and unlikely to ever be)
I would add Coronato, Wolf & Pelletier...neither of whom have established themselves in the NHL or secured a spot.

I guess if we rank everyone on the list you can just disregard players of any age cutoff you choose.

I would say to include Boltman. His rights may expire on August 15th (as per capfriendly, and Ryan Pike's article which states it may or may not, as he transferring to Northeastern).
https://flamesnation.ca/news/calgary...ern-university
Depending on when we start voting, how large the voting list is, and how many run-offs end up happening, Boltman may or may not still be a Flames prospect. I would say include him as he is only 22, and if he ends up not being signed (and the Flames losing his rights - which may or may not happen) then we may cross him off before the voting reaches him.

Can it not be some combination of games played and age? If, for example, ZP plays 80 games this season, he's probably not a prospect next year.
Mabye age + games played/2 < 30 (or 28?)? Something similar?

So far I'm getting
+ Pelletier
+ Wolf
- Cooley
Leave Boltmann and Kouz in it as well.

That problem goes away if you just don't call them prospects. Make it a U-25 ranking.
