Icon34 Preds acquire Andrew Gibson from Detroit for Kliskinen and 2024 2nd (53rd OA)

Interesting as Detroit just drafted Gibson in the 2023 draft 42nd OA and Nashville drafted Kliskanen in the 3rd round 2023.

https://www.nhl.com/predators/news/p...n-from-detroit

Quote:
Nashville Predators General Manager Barry Trotz announced today that the team has acquired defenseman Andrew Gibson from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for forward Jesse Kiiskinen and Tampa Bay’s second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft.

Gibson, 19 (2/13/05), established OHL career highs in games played (68), goals (12), assists (32) and points (44) with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in 2023-24, helping his team reach the second round of the postseason before falling to Saginaw. Gibson led the Greyhounds and was seventh among all OHL defensemen in plus-minus (+36); he also was second among team blueliners in goals and assists and was third in points. The 6-foot-3, 196-pound native of Windsor, Ont., added two assists in 11 playoff games and recorded nine multi-point contests during the regular season, headlined by a four-point effort on Sept. 29 vs. Flint (4a).

Originally drafted by Detroit in the second round (42nd overall) of the 2023 NHL Draft, Gibson has recorded 65 points (19g-46a) in 119 career OHL games – all with the Greyhounds – since debuting in 2021-22. Internationally, the defenseman earned a bronze medal with Canada at the 2023 U-18 World Championship, where he posted three assists, a +5 rating and 25 penalty minutes in seven appearances.

then took that 2nd and flipped it to San Jose along with Jake Walman. So essentially "downgraded" from Gibson to Kiiskinen in order to get rid of Walman.

Wouldn’t mind if the flames made deals like this. Take on higher aav guys with 1-2 years left on their deals and get a youth asset with it

Huh. I guess Yzerman thinks that one or two of his prospects are ready for the jump. Walman has been pretty steady for them.

What happened to Walman? The Wings loved him a year ago and thought they had a long-term partner for Seider.

Yzerman must be clearing room for one of the big UFAs like Skjei.

Seems like pretty good production from the blueline for Gibson. I bet he's thrilled to be in the Nashville system, since they are a defense factory

Tidy work my the sharks.
They're still most likely a bottom 5, but I don't think they're guaranteed worst.

Wonder what the wings are up to. Seems like a bad deal in isolation. Must be something in the chamber.

Sharks are having a great off season, they are adding quality bodies for nothing, even adding assets to take good players with in Walman's case a good contract too.

This is an example of maybe why full tank isn't that bad of an idea, teams are just giving them good players now they got their guy.

Probably still in mix for Hagens too.

Interesting notes on the Walman salary dump, apparently Yzerman didn't really shop him and SJ was willing to take Walman for free off waivers.

Quote:
The other puzzling thing is that Yzerman apparently didn’t shop Walman around a ton. Based off some of my conversations and reading reports from others, there were multiple teams that would have been interested in actually trading something for Walman.

And if the Red Wings were truly desperate to be clear of Walman, they could have kept the second-round pick and simply waived him. The San Jose Sharks, I know for a fact, would have claimed him on waivers since they are first in the waiver order, like they did with Barclay Goodrow. In fact, I’ve heard San Jose was happily stunned when Yzerman simply didn’t ask for a return and offered a second-round pick sweetener.

Whether Walman was part of the plan or not, this was pretty horrific asset management by Yzerman.

Walman has a Devon Toews vibe to me.

I think he's gonna have a really good career.

I like Walman, but he's 28 and has a career high of 21 points. He has yet to have 10 assists in a season (although he would have in each of the last 2 if he played full seasons).
