Landmark case in BC.

Quote:
The first Canadian to face criminal prosecution at home for sex crimes allegedly committed abroad has pleaded not guilty to 28 charges.
Does Canada have the right to charge Canadians for acts committed in other countries? Should that be our worry or the worry of the country in which the acts were committed?

Also, if Canada should care, what else should this be applied to? Murder? Drugs? Speeding tickets?

(edit to include forgotten link to news story)

Hmmmm, bit of a slippery slope on this one, but I'd say in this case it's okay by me.

It involves children, right? Yes, we should care. We should care enough to send him away for a very long time if guilty. Just like we would with murder -- we would care if some guy took a nice trip to Thailand and shot a bunch of people and then came home and went back to work. Same thing. Plus, who is to say he won't do the same thing here? Edit: which he apparently has.

Edit to remove request for link that was eventually provided by an edit.

It seems to me that gathering the facts in many countries would be hard to do and therefore would put into question the notion of a fair trial.

I don't like the idea of letting guys like this off but at the same time I think that it is a risky proposition to start prosecuting Canadians for acts while in other countries.

I agree that child sex related crimes are severe. We don't want anyone like that in our world.

But where does it stop? Should people who go over to the Netherlands and partake in their Red Light districts or legalized drug trade be prosecuted once they get back here?

If the other country wants to prosecute this person, no problem. Box him/her up, ship him/her over. (Of course, there are plenty who disagree with this practice)

If the other country doesn't care that this goes on within their borders, why should we?

If they break the laws in the country there is we should happily extradite him/her.

If somebody is stupid enough to go over to a foreign country and break thier laws then they shouldn't expect Canada a country that should respect law and order to protect him.

If we have matching laws here then we should be allowed to prosecute them here if they actually make it home.

This guy is a scumbag, he's committed crimes here and abroad. Hopefully they toss him into a deep dark whole

What if the laws in those countries don't consider those sex acts to be crimes?

The age of consent varies depending on which country you're in. In the US, I think it's 18. In Canada, I think it's 14 (too low, but we'll save that for another day). In some Asian countries, I think it might be lower than 14.
