Judge to MLB: Statistics are not Copyrightable
Good news for fantasy sports players. There had been an on-going lawsuit regarding the use of player names and statistics by CDM Fantasy Sports. MLB refused to license the stats to CDM, so CDM sued to be allowed to use the names and stats. The judge has agreed with CDM, so this should allow Fantasy Sports leagues to use the stats as published without being frozen out by any pro leagues.
I wonder if that does anything to the exclusivity agreements many pro-leagues signed with video game makers? The makers may not be able to use the likeness of the athletes, but the names and stats should be fair game.
