Default Marchand: Crosby's not getting the credit he deserves right now

Quote:
“I think he’s still obviously one of the best in the world, but he’s not really getting the credit he deserves right now,” Marchand said. “A lot of the attention is on the younger guys, but if you look at the details of the game, and full 200 feet, he’s by far the best player in the League, him and (Colorado Avalanche forward) Nathan MacKinnon.”

He added, “Two good Nova Scotia boys.”
Quote:
“That’s the way that the game is going,” Marchand said. “The young guys are getting the attention now. There’s a lot of flashy young guys coming to the League but if you look at the attention that Bedard’s getting compared to Sid, they’re not on the same level right now. Bedard’s a [heck] of a player for his age, but Sid’s one of the best to ever play the game, one of the top couple players in the League now and Bedard probably gets more attention than anybody.

Marchie's been one of my favourite players since he came in. A smaller, skilled guy, but he plays a bigger man's game and isn't afraid to drive the paint. Love what he says about Sid and Nate, and the way he leans towards players that play in all areas when he thinks about who the best is. Also, it's cool to market the younger kids, but don't forget about the ones that helped build things along the way. Mentions how Crosby would never say anything, but it just drives him to be even better.

The league and media has only ever been able to market one player at a time.

Crosby's still the best player in the league in my opinion. I could see compelling arguments for Nate Mackinnon and Cale Makar though. Marchand ain't wrong.

This is Sid's sixth all-star game? That's it?

EDIT: Oh ya....and Marchand says Nate and Sid are two best in league. "By far".

I think for a few years he was considered hurt and took the time for recovery or whatever

I think of Crosby and heel to heel skating the same way I think of Roy and the butterfly.

Didn't invent it, wasn't the first to do it... but was the one that inspired generations to do it and changed the game with it.

(Obviously Roy/butterfly was a much more massively game-changing thing though.)

yeah he's missed for a variety of reasons

here's an article from 2015 talking about him finally playing in his second all star game- then I believe in the end the Pens held him out that year

https://penslabyrinth.com/2015/01/19...ear-star-game/

Ever since entering the league back in 2005, Sidney Crosby has been a perennial scoring machine and this year is no different. Crosby has been named to the NHL All-Star team nine times in his ten year career. However, this year will only be the second time he has actually played in the All-Star game. Three times Sidney Crosby has missed the All-Star game due to playing in the Olympics (2006, 2010, 2014). Then another four All-Star games Crosby has missed due to injuries to his ankle, knee and two concussions (2008, 2009, 2011, 2012).

Yeah I'd probably put the three of these guys in a tie for 1st, which makes Crosby all the more impressive seeing as he's 8 years older than Mackinnon and 11 years older than Makar.

Crosby has been so dominant for so long I think there's a bit of blindness when it comes to his unreal skill.

Oh look, Crosby just top binned a backhand shot from the top of the face off circle, ho hum.

Oh look, Crosby has once again impossibly scored from the goal line while standing on the half wall, big deal.

He does incredible stuff all the time and people just expect it of him, he doesn't get the praise it deserves.

Players with 200+ points in the playoffs without playing on a line with Gretzky in the 80s:

Gretzky
Jagr
Crosby

(the others are Messier, Kurri and Anderson) (Mess in the 80s was like Draisaitl today... was technically #2C, but was stacked with Gretz all the time.)

Sid also bakes banana bread for his teammates. Heck of a guy and hockey player.

Refreshing article.

The automatic association between "best player" and youth is overblown. Experience counts for a lot, and plenty of players see their best years from 27-35. You saw that in the late 2010s with Crosby and Bergeron in the latter half of his career. Lidstrom, Burns, etc.

I do think the media needs to pump the brakes on the youth circle jerk now and then and recognize the old guard who can be as good as any one on any given night.

The 200 foot game isn't always "sexy" per se, but it wins games. Hence why Crosby has 3 cups and McDavid has 0.

Crosby is unbelievable. Best player I've ever seen, and nobody who has entered the league since him comes close in my opinion. Not much flash (anymore) but all heart and will.

He’s probably the most well rounded player that’s ever played the game
