Nolan Patrick retires at 25
Quote:
Plagued by a migraine disorder, Patrick last appeared in a game with the Vegas Golden Knights in March 2022.
Reports of his retirement surfaced Tuesday after The Power Play, a hockey coaching and mentorship program, announced his employment as a skills specialist and video coach in an Instagram post.
The post referred to Patrick as a "retired pro with significant NHL experience.

Sad, poor guy. Hopefully he gets well enough to enjoy life after playing hockey.

just a shame to see a career derailed and ended so early by injuries. Hope he can manage those concussions issues as well as possible.

Injuries really suck, he had a lot of potential. Good luck to him in his post-hockey life

look who was picked right after him:
Heiskanen
Makar
Pettersson
...then later on in round 2: Robertson.
Crazy good draft year.

It is interesting to look at past drafts and where the actual stars got picked. Other than a small handful of players it probably lessens the validity of the tank strategy.

It actually validated tank works
Makar, Heskinen, Petterson all top 5 pick
Sure you can luck out on Robertsons or Kucherov or Gaudreau but that’s once a life time luck

So makar was picked at #3 and has won the Norris, playoff MVP and led his team to a Stanley Cup championship?
Getting a top 3 pick might actually work then! I'm flabbergasted!!

Only took until the 5th post to derail the thread into draft picks and tanking strategies. Good work!
Anyway...crappy for Nolan.

In my lifetime, so far, the Flames have these late picks:
3rd round Adam Fox
4th round Johnny Gaudreau
4th round TJ Brodie
4th round Robert Reichel
8th round Theo Fleury
9th round Gary Suter
6th round Brett Hull
3rd round Mike Vernon
9th round Hakan Loob
They are clearly not "once in a lifetime".
It helps to have high picks, but good players can be found throughout the draft.

I recall being mildly annoyed the Devils didn't pick him at 1OA.

Yep, the Flames need a player to request a trade, sit on that player for a year and a half while certain fans go apoplectic for not dealing the asset sooner, then trade him to a team for a following year unprotected 1st round pick, then have the team they traded to bottom out and end up bottom 3. Then hope other teams below don't win the lottery and push them out of the top 3. Then they have to hope the player they pick is actually the best player in the draft.
It's so simple!

Brodie and Reichel were not franchise altering players. Fleury and the rest were drafted over 30 yrs ago. Drafts were very different back then.
Also look at the rosters of all the Stanley cup winners. Most of them have at least one top 5 pick if not multiple
