The least they could do is makeup a comedic injury excuse like Hossa and his jersey related allergies.

I don't follow a lot of other sports like I used to, does this "mysterious LTIR injury" thing happen across the board?

In the NHL - definitely!

It's used to put bad player on LTIR and gain cap space.

Toronto alone put: Muzzin, Murray, and Klingberg on LTIR. All in opportune moments when they needed cap space.

Edmonton did this with M. Smith.

Vegas is doing it with Lehner.

Then you have instances like Kucherov missing the entire season, but joining the team for the playoffs so Tampa could repeat.

Stone did a similar thing with Vegas last year.

Everyone in the NHL is battling through something during the season, so it's hard to gauge pain, and the toll the accumulation of injuries takes.

LTIR needs to be fixed.

Getting way too “convenient” for these teams that overspend.

LTIR should require passing a protocol that includes a league rep investigating the nature/extent of the injury to confirm that it meets the criteria.

Teams are abusing this too much for injuries that are all but certainly less than serious & long term. You're not fooling anybody that it just HAPPENS to be the albatross that is handcuffing your cap situation.

You especially can't let Toronto and Edmonton get away with it. They've earned the cap pickles they've found themselves in.

Who ####ing cares. “I want this team to pay a penalty for paying way more for a player than I consider fair”. I can’t think of a bigger waste of my brain space for hockey on “LTIR abuse”

It might not matter except that multiple recent cup winners have utilized it and iced line ups that would exceed the cap in playoffs. When you're talking about it factoring into championships, I think it deserves greater attention.

How are we deciding the best team of the lot each year when it isn't being played on an even playing field. For a game that people pour so much money into each year and league that's touted as the best in the world there should at the very least be integrity with these things. Otherwise it's only the best at certain things, and bush league with others.

The league does look into specific situations
The issue is teams can have a roster that exceeds the cap in the playoffs. But that’s how the rules are written.
The idea that players are faking injuries is overblown

It's not going to change unless the owners want a change, and not enough of them want it to change because they want to be able to do the same thing if they have to.

My favourite solution so far and the simplest - You can do whatever you want with LTIR but each roster that you ice for a playoff game must be cap compliant that night. So yeah, you can be $14m or $18mil over the cap in the playoffs like Tampa and Vegas were.

But the roster on the ice that game can't exceed the cap, so you need to make decisions.

I believe something like that would require a change to the cba
