20 years already? When did that happen?

I still remember thinking he could help us win a "few" games while Turek was out. Other than that, he would be a career back up. Boy, I was wrong.

my sister got married in EDM the day before and on the drive home I had it tuned to 960 for hours, Peter Maher kept reinforcing that Sutter was telling him this guy was 'for real' and not just a stop gap

then I went to watch him for the first time against Colorado (he had picked up 2 wins by then) and thought yikes, maybe he's been figured out (he let in 6 on 24)

was glad to be wrong

He would have the most wins in the league over the next decade. How lucky we were to have him.

He was the Sharks' third string. Everyone was asking, "couldn't we get Toskala for a 2nd?"

I can’t remember off the top of my head an other instance of a fairly minor (at the time) trade being such a franchise defining and altering moment.

I’m sure there’s plenty around the league but Flames wise, I can’t think of another one like it in my time following the team.

man those were the days. Never had to worry about goaltending at all every single game!

Only worry was if we were going to score more than 1 or 2 goals...

It bothers me every time someone mentions "the next Kipper" in regards to needing a #1 goalie. We may never have one like him again. And that's okay. He was one of the best ever at his position.

I still remember telling my father, who has since passed, that Kipper was going to be good. I was sitting in his truck with him and had a copy of the Sun, and just from reading a couple of quotes from Sutter, I was already convinced.

I mean, I had no idea he was going to be as good as he was... but I had the sense this was no third-string/backup we picked up. I wish I could remember what Sutter said, but then again it probably wasn't so much what he said - it was probably more that Sutter was able to say things in a way that just kinda hit you over the head with how much sense he's making.

Just such an amazing goalie to watch, the athleticism, instincts, and demeanor were incredible. I will go to my grave in the belief that is Luongo is in the hall, Kipper should be too. Superior goalie in every way, with the exception of not being a diving loser.

I'll always remember the first game against Detroit in the 2nd round of the 2004 playoffs. Beating the Canucks felt like the season was won, and I was just happy to be watching another game. Kipper straight up stole that first game, and we all started to wonder if maybe there was more of a chance to compete with Detroit than we all thought.

We got outshot (sometimes grossly) in every single game except the last one in that series, I think.

I started going to games more post 03/04. Never knew how lucky we were to get such a great goalie day in and day out
20 years just like that

04-07 there was no one on the planet that was close.

Was a borderline real life Marvel characcter with supernatural powers.

I remember the hate articles out of San Jose in spring 2004, crying that Kipper was essentially a ginger cheat code back there.

20 years since the 2004 run.. Jesus Murphy. What an incredibly fun, and massively disappointing season. I don't care if any of my other major sports teams win.. nothing would've been sweeter than that Gelinas goal
