Post Microphone Search

I've been looking for a new microphone to use with my computer for some time. I strongly dislike headphones, don't really want a desktop mic, and I want to switch over to using a USB mic because I've been having issues with my motherboard's built-in sound.

With these criteria in mind, I've come to the conclusion that I'm looking for a USB lapel microphone, USB lavalier microphone, or USB headworn microphone. The problem is that my searching so far has not turned up a single product like this anywhere on the internet. Is there some reason that none of those would exist? Can anyone help me find one? I'd be very grateful for any help. I'm getting frustrated with this because it makes sense to me that someone somewhere would make a suitable product for me, but so far I've been completely stymied.

Would something like this help?

They're everywhere on ebay, including the reverse (female end on the 3.5 mm stereo plug).

Thanks for the idea. It certainly looks like a decent option. I wonder if there's any disadvantage to using an adapter like that.

I also stumbled across this (http://www.revolabs.com/products_wm/xtag.htm) which looks super cool. The only concerns I have with it are the battery life and the price.

I may pick up one of those Logitech things while I keep looking for a better mic than what I'm using.

Back when I was trying to figure out recording video for youtube I picked up one of these as a backup plan...

Unfortunately I haven't tested it with a microphone. I can sure vouch for the sound quality though - I use it with my laptop at work, and like most laptops the sound output is underwhelming. The built-in amplifier on this device makes a HUGE difference.

Probably a few bucks more than the Logitech device, but if you also plan to use the headphone jack totally worth it IMHO.

Necro bump.

I am looking for a lapel mic that can hook right into your phone using blue tooth, with no interface needed. The USBC port on my phone is buggered. So it would need to wirelessly connect.

I read somewhere else that headphones with mics would work, but I would prefer them to be inconspicuous, not visible to the eye.

What are you trying to accomplish?
What situations are you using this?
Are speaker and headphones supposed to be separate outputs? (can create interference if yes)
How much hiding are you trying to do/why? (lapel mic can potentially still be seen in many video calls)
What's your budget? (cheap and functional, or something regular usage, so slightly nicer?)

You could do a bluetooth speaker/mic conference call unit that is designed for phone and video calls. Some can clip on the sun shade in a vehicle, but can be placed outside the view of a video call. Others are just a unit you place somewhere within range, but outside of the view of the video call. The use of these units are kinda meh outside of a phone or video call though.

You could do bluetooth headset or ear buds (one side or two side options) that don't have a stick pointing at your face, but the earbud(s) might be visible in calls. It's not as large as a headphone. These units are much more usable on a regular basis for music and other stuff. There's also the option for open vs closed (ie: if you need to be aware of your surroundings and sound).

You could do a bluetooth lapel mic, but many will be about as visible as the bluetooth earbuds. Again, not really as useful on a regular basis other than specific phone calls or video calls. Most usage of these are moreso if someone is doing a separate higher quality recording for to replace the default sound recording on a phone or something.

If you're truly leaning towards the bluetooth lapel mic route that is visible anyways, I feel like a boomerang neckband speaker is worth considering. It's basically a cross between the conference call unit and lapel mic.

Most of these would be controlled via tactile buttons on the units and buttons within app. No app interface.

I've used all of these at different points in time. I personally would be leaning towards the neck band or ear buds for phone/video calls. We see people with the airpods in their ear for news interviews all the time, so something slightly visible is OK.

Can rent them pretty cheap at Long & McQuade if you don’t want to buy it.

I am filming a DIY movie with a friend outdoors with no power supply near by.

another option would be for us to create a boom mic of sorts by using a field recorder, but it would be nice for post production to have the sound local to the video so I don't need to spend a whack of time lining things up.

Maybe a Lavalier mic for doing coordinated recording of sound during filming?

Because it's coordinated, there's very little lining up. You can clip these to lapels, inner pockets, t-shirts, hats, necklaces etc. You can connect via bluetooth or just let it record and then lining up post production is minimal.

Is that what you're sorta looking for?
