Default Spengler Cup

Can anyone tell me what this thing is? I read a quick blurb on TSN saying that Hnat Dominichelli was playing for Team Canada in it.

Who attends this thing for Team Canada? It seems pretty off the radar. What's it all about?

I guess what I'm asking is; who makes Team Canada? NHL'ers? Canadian players who play in Switzerland? Does Hockey Canada have anything to do w/ the selections?

Off the radar only because the major networks really want nothing to do with a Christmas Euro tournament:
a) Because its Christmas, in Europe with what is essentailly a thrown together team Canada from those in Euro leagues, and the odd (since the national program was killed a few years back) ex pro or CIAU players.

b)Because the Juniors have been pumped up and the tournament marketing in this country by TSN to a premier status over the past 10 years, when most of the rest of the hockey world could care less about the WJ tournament.

Good on these Spengler guys, throwing on the Maple Leaf during thier league break, not for the glory or recognition, but because they love to play hockey for thier country.

Oh I see what you are asking. Yeah, like Browna said, its mainly European-based Canadian players that suit up for the tourney. Not sure who picks who plays though...

Didn't Thornton play for Davos in the Spengler last year? I thought I remember something about that....

Yup, and the other club teams that participate occasionally have Canadians on them as well.

I may be wrong, but I believe the Canadian team is the only "national" team in the tourney. I think the rest are club teams representing the nation they play in.

The Russian team is coached by our old coach - Dave King.

The Russian Goalie is Canadian.
