Opening Night Roster Surprises
So, how did it go for everybody? Any prospects or depth guys making the show? Any negative surprises?
Rangers had several pleasant surprises:
C Matthew Poitras has made the Bruins
D Tristan Luneau has made the Ducks
D Ty Emberson has made the Sharks
D Declan Chisholm has made the Jets
G Lukas Dostal has made the Ducks
G Ivan Prosvetov has made the Avalanche
Well, Dostal making the Ducks is not that surprising, but the others are. Both Poitras and Luneau are only 19 and could well go back to juniors at some point, but making the opening night roster is impressive. Both Emberson and Prosvetov were waiver claims, so we'll see ... but cool to see them get a chance. Looks like Chisholm and Logan Stanley will open the season as #7/8 for the Jets, so we'll see how that goes.
Disappointments were Pontus Holmberg (TOR) and Nick Blankenburg (CBJ). Both were late cuts and should be back at some point, but still. Hunter McKown (CBJ) and Nikita Nesterenko (ANA) didn't make it either after getting the college FA treatment in the spring, but I figured as much. Maybe they'll get a look at some point. Rasmus Asplunds (FLA) NHL career seems to be fizzling out, which is a shame.
Overall, pretty cool. Tracking prospects and their development is one of my favourite aspects of this league, so seeing some of them making it is a lot of fun.
