Great news about Gilbert, he plays such a heavy game and is good at transitions as well, glad to see it wasn’t as serious as feared. Might mean Solovyov gets sent down to start the season which is fine because he is easily the first call up on the backend once an injury or trade occurs. I’ve really liked what I’ve seen from Osterle and Solovyov this preseason.

The Coronato with Backlund is intriguing. I know they tried Coleman on the line a couple times and it reminds me of the Frolik-Backlund-Tkachuk line in Tkachuk's rookie year. Coronato sounds like he has the smarts to play in that role.

Disappointing seeing Solovyov removed from the top group. He earned more of a look, if not a spot.

Otherwise it looks good.

Wouldn't be opposed to seeing Coronato on the 1st line honestly. He could drive that line, but would likely end up getting hardest defensive pairings for sure.

Mangiapane hasn't looked too good on any line yet this pre-season, not sure how he continues to get an extended look. I'd argue Dube has better chemistry with both Lindholm and Huberdeau.
Still worried about Markstrom, he hasn't had a real good game yet and looked like his old self last night.

Sounds like the D are set - Was hoping Solovyov would have had more of a look but it would appear the coaching staff have given it to Oesterle to start.

Not trying to pretend that I know more than the coaches, but I have to say - I like this:

Huberdeau-Backlund-Coronato
Ruzicka - Lindholm - Sharangovich
Dube - Kadri - Mangiapane
Coleman - Zary - Duehr

a lot more than this:

Not sure I've seen enough "good" from Schwindt to be getting playing time ahead of Zary at this point.

I haven’t watched many preseason games in full. Why is Coleman on the 4th line?

It is crazy to me that there are still 3 pre season games.

Agreed.

But maybe they're just giving Schwindt one more look. I can't see him making the team , based on what we've seen so far.

Gotta take a look at Huby-Lindholm-Bison.

My personal favourite line to try that I've seen some posters hyping up is Huby-Backs-Bison.
That line would take off

Fit, as much as anything.

Compared to: Huberdeau, Mangiapane, Sharangovich, Coronato, Dube and Ruzicka, Coleman makes more sense than any of the tohers to be on the 4th line. Only argument being Ruzicka, who could maybe center the 4th. But if Ruzicka clicks in the top 9, it's found money, and just what the Flames need.

Not a slight on Coleman, IMO.

I don’t think it’s anything against Coleman - they’re giving Ruzicka every opportunity to grab a top 9 spot and someone has to play on the 4th line right now - he’s a low-maintenance player who won’t complain about it. He doesn’t have to change his game to be effective on a 4th line which is something you probably can’t say for a lot of other forwards.

I still expect him to play with Backlund. Wouldn’t surprise me if they rotate that 4th line spot throughout the season based on performance. Worst performer in the top 9 gets that spot.

I'm surprised Schwindt hasn't been sent down already. The games I've seen him in I forget he's even playing. Not sure what his strength is supposed to be but he's just....there. Not sure what he brings that other players can't. Would rather have Hunt center that 4th line instead.

Every year teams figure it out and every year I wonder how. This year is no exception. How are they going to get under the Cap?

They are over by $213,333 now with a 22 man roster including Pelletier and Kylington. With Pelletier out, the Flames are only at 11 forwards. Have to add at least one and that one should be a center. Rooney is the most expensive and puts the Flames $1.5MM over. Any of the other guys (Schwindt, Zary, Hunt, Klapka, etc) puts the Flames around ~$1MM over. Adding two of the guys in brackets would put them around ~$1.8MM over.

The easy answer is Kylington on LTIR. But, what if he comes back? Pelletier can go on LTIR as well I think, but he is definitely coming back.

Coronato and Pelletier don't have to clear waivers, but I doubt they're going down anyway (don't think Pelletier can while injured). Would Oesterle, Gilbert, Ruzicka clear waivers?

Like I said, the easy answer is Kylington on LTIR. Trade someone of course is another option, but not many teams can take on salary without returning some. I wonder what the plan will be if Kylington regains his health and is able to return.

I know the Flames aren't the only team in this position. Waiver wire could get interesting. Not sure the Flames can show any interest though.

That's exactly how I feel - he is just there.

I think Hunt has been the best of the candidates, and would be fine with him sticking, but I would like Zary to get it, just to see how he can do.
