Wow. Mats Zuccarello is already 36-years old. How time flies.

It's a good deal for what he produced last year but there is risk as he's already 36...so you're paying for his 37 and 38 year old seasons.
I know the comparison to the Backlund contract will get made - so this would be like re-signing Backlund 2 years from now when he has 1 year left on his deal.

It is interesting that Zuccarello's first +1.00 pts/GP season did not happen until he was 34-years old, and also interesting that he came close to those numbers again last year.

It's interesting...effective veterans might be the new market inefficiency in the NHL.
The league has shifted so much focus to young players that there is some good value to find on 35+ forwards that are still effective but being a bit overlooked in UFA as teams shy away due to the risk.

He's s good player for sure. Age is a risk, but if he puts up 40 points and can play against above average players he easily delivers value at this number. Come next season 4 million will be what an average salary is.

Zuccarello is similar to Backs in that he’s still been effective well into his 30’s and it doesn’t seem like his play is gonna decline anytime soon. Good deal

It's amazing to remember this guy had a skull fracture and brain contusion in 2015 and couldn't even speak or move one arm for a few days.

Joe Pavelski was 38 last year and put up 77 points in 82 games and another 14 points in 14 games in the playoffs this year.
He's 39 years old this year. Does anyone want to bet against his production?
I mean- there's clearly certain types of veterans that age like fine wine and will produce until they decide to retire and I think the differentiation is that players that play a "skill" game will rather than just sheer "physical" attributes will continue to do well.
And to relate it back to the Flames, I expect Huberdeau to age like fine wine.

He’s still pretty dynamic so it’s a great contract for a vet who can still skate.

Good price if he holds up with age.

He also didn't play his first full season in the NHL until he was 26. He had portions of a couple of seasons before that, but didn't do anything note worthy.

Zuccarello has great on-ice chemistry with Kaprizov - and they’re best buds off the ice too. This is the Wild keeping their superstar happy.

If he keeps getting better with age, maybe he'll play well into his 40s, or even 50s like Jagr and Howe!
