There should be criminal charges. That's assault with a weapon.

Agreed, if I do that on Stephen Avenue, I'm in jail. Why is this ok because it happens on a sheet of ice?

I didn't experience anything to this extreme level (but close), but it's stuff like this that made me stop playing beer league.

I can't be bothered to drag my ass halfway across the city at 11PM to deal with this garbage (or anything close to it)... then have to work the next day.

It's basically science that every team has one maniac on it.

You can do that on Stephen Ave and be out in a few hours, free until your court date that gets postponed indefinitely until the charges get dropped due to lack of resources.

The only thing they're vigilant about up here is collecting fines.

I've never understood how people get so worked up so as to commit an assault.

We all have to go to work tomorrow.

Looks like a typical game in the 40+ league we just left for a different one.

Way, way back in the day I used to work at Rec Centers, now I cant say I've seen anyone swing a stick at someone, but fights were more than common.

I'm sure the guys who play Men's League hockey know way more about it than I do.

It’s usually because one guy is a legit maniac/complete ####### and has made a few attempts to hurt guys. It escalates quickly from there.

I’ve gravitated towards this pick up league in town because they are the same 20 or so guys and teams are switched up all the time, rooms are open to all… it creates a completely different vibe on the ice. Still competitive too.

Pretty sad reactions here that say a lot about the state of society. Now, I know this isn’t popular, but I’m more than a little tired of listening to people who want to take violent stick swinging out of the sport. Personally, the wusification of our sport is making it worse. If we take out stick swinging, there is just going to be more fighting, more verbal disagreements, more just letting things go like adults. Is that what you people really want?

Maybe it’s just me, but I grew up with stick swinging and I still like it. My favourite memories involve stick swinging heroics from guys like Probert and McSorley. I would stop watching clips of beer league hockey online if they took stick swinging out of the game.

I played Rec Hockey in Prince George 27 years ago. That league was more violent than the NHL is today. Now that everything is on camera you think it would calm things down. But you get guys drinking before games...and they do dumb things.

I had an employee a few years back who grew up in Northern Manitoba.

The stories....my God...there are Maximum Security Prisons more civilized than Northern Manitoba Men's League Hockey.

Why can't they just ask to see pictures of their families on their phones instead!

This is why I don't play rec/beer league hockey despite really wanting to be on the ice. I have a passion to play but I don't want to deal with this type of garbage or other cheap shots because getting hurt at this point in life is not worth it and recovery is not fun.

I'll stick to some pick-up shinny with the old guys.
