Say what you want, but Matthews bets on himself.

I like it.

Likely 4 years or 1. Matthews had all the leverage .

Smart move. Stays on a good team with a chance to win for 4 more years but will be young enough that he can bolt and sign a massive deal elsewhere to retire.

Treliving handing out one the largest cap hits for a winger last offseason and the highest overall cap hit this offseason.

AAV is fine for Matthews. Term ... we'll see.

Golden work by the Leafs in my eyes.

They've bought all of Matthews' peak years and paid appropriately for them. Trade him in that 4th year, or let him walk via free agency and begin the next build.

Spits him out at 29, which is plenty of time to sign a league max contract.

It wasn't that long ago, 4 years seemed like a pretty long deal. Now with all the 7 and 8 year deal out there, it seems short.

I think it's a decent term though. It gives the team a window and then both sides can re-evaluate in a few years.

This is something that I found Matthews to be excellent at.

For instance, look at the McDavid deal. He took Max dollars and Max Term. Which....many would consider to be smart. You never know when you're going to get hurt, etc.

But Matthews understands that the Cap and CBA are fluid, which is why he builds his contracts with signing bonuses and various other mechanisms alongside shorter terms which ensure that he gets paid regardless and, that he has opportunities to maximize his earnings as the Cap increases.

I dont think there has ever been another player to structure contracts like him. I dont know if thats Matthews or his Agent, but their structures are brilliant and their risk tolerance is exceptional.

How so? McDavid's was $100M. Mackinnon's is $100,800,000 (and next year he makes $16.5M, $3M more than Matthews).

Yeah no issue with it just stating hes handed out some large AAV the last two off season.

Just a bit different to see as the Flames up until last year largest AAV was 7 million for Tkachuk and Iggy.

Leafs are not going to get a single year of discount with Matthews, ever. I like it!

It's not that bad for the team either. Locking in at a high salary for max term ties a team's hands a lot. And rarely do they save money that way.
