Default Halifax Restaurant Suggestions

I am in Halifax next week for work.

Staying at the Marriott Waterfront, 1919 Upper Water St.

I am taking clients out on Wednesday night. They are all Senior VPs at one of the large Canadian banks.

I'd love an impressive restaurant that is walking distance from the hotel. One of the VPs is a full on "foodie".

When I've travelled to an unfamiliar city to entertain clients, I usually either ask the concierge at the hotel, or - even better IMO - if I know someone's a "foodie", I ask them... It's always worked out great as the client feels like they're showing you something and you don't run the risk of awkwardly taking them to some place they dislike.

Right downtown at the waterfront and walking distance I would suggest McKelvie's Restaurant, amazing Halibut Steak and nice ambiance as well. Definitely my suggestion if you wanted something upscale and authentic and close. The Press Gang Restaurant & Oyster Bar is supposed to be excellent but I haven't gone and is also further.

I was more on the quest for the perfect fish and chips my last trip to Halifax though and I wouldn't really consider Halifax a foodie's paradise unless they are really into seafood. The charm of Halifax is authentic local, so I wouldn't recommend an Italian restaurant there.

When you are done treating your clients and you want a fun little bite, head over to Bluenose II Restaurant for real Maritimer feast.

Is there an option to just punch them in the face?

2 Doors Down is my secodn cousin's restaurant. I don't really know him, but it's highly rated. On Brunswick by the Maritime Centre.

The suggestions above are all solid choices.

Enjoy Halifax, great town. I loved living there.

One option is taking the Ferry over to Dartmouth. There's some interesting places within walking distance over there and getting a chance to stretch your legs before and after a meal while also soaking in the views on the ferry is really nice. I don't know what is impressive in that area, but just an idea to consider to expand the horizon by adding a little bit of pre and post meal ambiance to the whole experience. Walking around the waterfront in Halifax and Dartmouth was very enjoyable.

I don't know if lobster rolls are in season, but option of grabbing one as a snack and washing it down with a beer on the way over would be kinda fun IMO. Adding a fun moment with local thoroughfare before an impressive meal could help you stick out more than just taking them to another impressive restaurant (I assume they've gone to a ton already). Make sure to have a small pack of wet wipes in your bag if you grab stuff like a lobster roll just in case.

My wife and I went to the Dartmouth side and at ate Sushi at the Dahlia. We ate a ton of Butterfish/Escolar and thought it was great... then we found stuff like this where it can have a horrible reaction similar to that of food poisoning + oily orange or yellow diarrhea:

https://rosieschwartz.com/2012/12/10...may-thank-you/

Thankfully we didn't get the bad reaction, but if there's Butterfish/Escolar on the menu anywhere (ie: fish option for fish and chips, sushi/sashimi etc.), be sure to be aware of the risks in consuming it as you can find it in inexpensive and higher end restaurants. That way you don't have a ####ty end to the experience if someone is sensitive to the oils in it.

Broth house was also a really enjoyable place for warm fare IMO. It was really good but I don't know if I'd call it impressive. Not a bad place to try and get take out for a side meal though.

OP: I am looking for a fancy restaurant to impress some Senior VPs. One of them is really into food. Ideally it is a short walk from a specific hotel.

FF: What about walking around and getting something from a food truck? After you are done, you can bring out your pre-packed wet wipes and clean their faces for them. Nothing impresses executives like someone being prepared with wet wipes.

Now, I know you gave a very specific area you wanted to eat in, and wanted amazing food, but here is a place in a different area, that you need to take a boat to, that can give you diarrhea in multiple colours.

You are welcome.

Yeah, he's trying to schmooze clients, not get laid. Or maybe he is. I don't judge.

I've been in the scenario here in Calgary where it was a fun idea to grab a beer and snack while waiting for others to freshen up before going for fine dining. Those that didn't need to freshen up, send a few emails, call their families etc. grabbed a beer together and watched people wander by in their stampede gear to pass the time.

At the end of the project, a few of them didn't remember where we went for food, but they did recall we blew off a little steam before going to dinner and watched the locals do local things.

I was at a conference where the guy tried to schmooze me and a few others VPs and partners to try and poach us for a big project. Nice dinner with wine and cuisine devolved into beers, shots and whiskey/scotch to show us they were work hard play hard type of people.

That's all I was suggesting. UCB said one VP is a foodie, he didn't say all of them are. I'm saying I've been in a part of a group where others had appreciated loosening the tie a little after some intense work has been completed (so to speak). Maybe that's not the group UCB is going to schmooze. That's fine. I just tossed an idea out there that I have seen that seemed reasonably successful.

"Hey, something stupid. I hear lobster rolls are in season right now. Other than the dinner, anyone else want to try one out sometime?" sort of thing.

I double checked lobster roll season and it's November to May. So it won't work for UCB. So indeed, my apologies for the stupid suggestion.

In my experience, trying to do touristy things with the locals - like walking around the Halifax waterfront, or enjoying the view from the ferry - would probably fall flat with your local client.

Can you imagine if someone came to Calgary to entertain you, and for that, they take you to Peter's Drive Inn and then walk along the ridge in Crescent Heights?

Agreed. If they're flying in, then it's different, but I guess I misread what UCB was asking for. My bad. Can ignore the earlier post.

Nah dude, I appreciate it.

In fact we are all flying in, two of the 4 are from Calgary, 1 from Montreal and 1 from Toronto.

It's all good, thanks for thinking outside the box even if it isn't appropriate for this particular situation

I didn't understand the situation and realize that everyone was flying in, and no one was local.

That does make things much different and FF's suggestions more reasonable.
