Default NHL and NHLPA discussing 2025 international competition and return to the Olympics

https://www.nhl.com/news/nhl-and-nhl...nd/c-345649998

Quote:
STOCKHOLM -- The NHL is working with the NHL Players' Association to create an international competition to be held in February 2025 with the intention of beginning a regular rotation of Olympic participation and a World Cup of Hockey in the even years to follow, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said at the European Player Media Tour on Wednesday.
Quote:
"So if we do a '25 international tournament, we do the '26 Olympics, the '28 World Cup of Hockey, the '30 Olympics, the '32 World Cup of Hockey, and so on," Daly said. "That's the goal."

Daly said the 2025 tournament does not have to follow the same format of a World Cup of Hockey, which the League and the NHLPA held in 1996, 2004 and 2016. He said there have been no shortage of ideas being discussed.

A. Is the NHL comfortable with the idea best-on-best tournaments without Russia?

B. Will there be proper qualifying? Will players be released for such qualifying?

C. Is the NHL willing to go the Olympics wherever that are being played? 2030 looks safe to be the US. SLC/Denver joint bid. But in the future, it could be Kazakhstan!

Rather than shutdown the season for this tournament would they follow the NBA in season tournament format but for international teams? Play pool games in season and have the final during all-star weekend or something.

That wouldn't work as that gimmick by the NBA is based and revolves around the actual schedule. The best and only tangible solution is a shut-down.

Do it in September like the last world Cup. I thought that worked well.

Would be better to do the NHL tournament in late August or early September instead of shutting down for 2 weeks every other year in February.

I guess it gives the Oiler players some practice for the upcoming WHC in May if they hold it in February.

The all-star weekend is a big celebration, wouldn't want to take away from that.

I don't get this fascination of going to the Olympics, where they have no control, if there's already a World Cup. Can't think of a team sport that has best-on-best tournaments both on their own and in the Olympics. Hockey wants that AND an annual world championship.

Soccer and basketball both have world championships and Olympic participation.

I would love every two years to watch best on best. I don’t think there is a single hockey fan who would be against this.

Soccer is a bit different though you can only have 3 overage players.

Why is this so hard? Olympics i get, but NHL creates a best on best world champ tournament. Is that not going to be a huge money maker?

Hard to care anymore. The league has dropped the ball for nearly 2 decades.

Exactly, and every time it's the same song and dance "Yep, this is gonna be a regular thing now" and then it's not.

I'm against having both. World Cup every 4 years in September only. Avoid the Olympics where you have to interrupt your season to go god know where.

Soccer is U-23 where teams don't even have to release players if they don't want to.

nobody cares about the basketball world championships.

My most memorable recent hockey moment was the 2010 Gold medal game with Iggy feeding Sid for the Golden Goal. It's tough being a Flames fan, but the best of Team Canada is a nice consolation prize to cheer for.

So they haven't gotten it right in the past, therefore we should never try to get it right going forward? Bizarre way to view the world.
