Icon45 Leafs Considering Extending Sheldon Keefe, Hire Guy Boucher as Assistant

https://twitter.com/user/status/1669789440615522319

Keefe has 1 more year I believe, so I'm a little surprised to hear this rumour. I figured Tre would wait and see how things go, but perhaps he feels Keefe may potentially leave for somewhere else if at the end of this season he's without a contract.

Edit to add Dreger's report which Score was basing theirs on.

Give him a 4 years extension, then fire him a year into that extension. It's a Treliving thing.

I can understand it. It is hard for a team to enter the season with a lame-duck coach. So, Treliving's choice as a GM is to either extend Keefe, or fire him.

The Leafs have tonnes of money and a coach's salary doesn't go on the cap. Unless Treliving knows for sure that a coaching change is needed, then it is simply easier to extend Keefe for 2 more seasons, and if things don't work out, then you fire him mid-season or at the end of the season and get your 'guy'.

I also don't think that Treliving has any more 'his guys' left. What coaches has he had experience with that he trusts? What coach from the past has made him look like a genius? I don't think he has anyone to draw from, except maybe giving Love a chance, or going with Cail MacLean.

Why is it difficult to enter the season with a lame duck coach?

I mean players usually perform best in contract years. Why would a coach be different.

The contract extension seemed to embolden Sutter this past year. Would things have played out differently if we had waited? He’s stated he was only interested in coming back to coach Calgary or Chicago. Would it have been terrible to finish out the contract and see where things lay? He was gonna jet to Chicago for a huge pay raise after another year of success?

Is Keefe a bad coach though? I would think if he were let go, he would get hired again pretty quickly.

Whether he is or not, Treliving would never know. He'd hire a magic 8-ball if it was the first one he interviewed. In this case Keefe is already there, so why look for another random warm body?

So why not wait until the last day he is under contract and hope he signs a new one based on speculative conversations? Doesn’t sound like Treliving

Keefe is a safe move as he has been in good books with the players. And I don't think that's a bad thing where they need to sign a lot of names. Especially Matthews. Let's face it, half the job is earning the coaches' respect and the other is the execution of the strategy. While they didn't execute as required, Keefe being ousted is a bit of a cop out. Let's see what the so-called Wizard can pull off here.

Was he the problem? Not so sure about that.

I doubt Messier in his prime coached by Bowman could win a cup in TO. There is something rotten about that team.

After Ballard was out of the picture, I thought for sure they’d win a cup. But they’ve mostly been just as ineffective, barring a few good years.

Well, with Sutter it was a year earlier. And it wasn't Treliving.
