The Tampa Bay Lightning have acquired a seventh-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for forwards Pat Maroon and Max Cajkovic tonight, vice president and general manager Julien BriseBois announced. Tampa Bay will retain 20 percent of Maroon's salary.
Maroon, signed as a free agent during August of 2019, played in 280 regular season games with the Lightning, recording 29 goals and 82 points. He skated in 77 playoff games with the Bolts, notching seven goals and 17 points, including back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships in 2020 and 2021.
He makes 1M. Why would you retain instead of burying his entire cap hit in the minors?
Maybe they know he's still an NHL player so they don't want to send him to the minors. They're doing him a favour. Stuff like that helps you with other players.
