I know this isn't a common thought but sometimes it's good to look at solid veterans and players who have actually won in the same category as player coaches who can really help coach and mentor younger and even older players.
Players can relate to other players sometimes better than coaches can. You always hear players say " X player really helped me and showed me the ropes of being an everyday NHL player"
I am still fuming that when we had a guy like Jagr in Calgary, we didn't keep him around longer to help mentor and teach some of our players some of the finer points, tactical knowledge and more. Even if he was injured and was just hanging out and skating with the guys.
At $1 million a year, Jagr was an overall bargain that can teach and show a lot. Players coulda actually learn a lot more from players of that caliber as opposed to Glen Gulutzan who we had at the time.
