Default LeBrun: All signs point to Hanifin not wanting to extend with Flames

News Update

From LeBrun:

Quote:
• All signs point to defenseman Noah Hanifin not wanting to extend with the Flames, so that situation is likely headed for a trade. He’s got one year left on his deal at a $4.95 million AAV. Obviously, new Flames GM Craig Conroy is juggling a lot with Elias Lindholm, Mikael Backlund and Tyler Toffoli among other players entering the last year of their deals and the Flames needing answers. Calgary, like Winnipeg, is an action team right now and can impact things around the league in many ways. The question is whether Conroy will be able to convince enough of these guys to extend and stay on board. His optimistic and positive demeanor is his greatest asset as a first-time GM.

“He’s the Ted Lasso of NHL GMs,” one agent said of Conroy’s likable personality.

on HNIC

says Hanifin is a name to watch in the trade market
limited D options on the market

No, Conroy missed the window with Columbus and now Hanifin has to leave as a UFA

How do Flames replace Hanifin internally? Also, I hope they move Tanev before injuries pile up and he loses a step.

I hope the fact Friedman mentioned the story on national TV will get a bidding war going. Would be great to finally get amazing returns on guys who potentially peaked.

Of the ‘7’, I think Hanifin is the one I’d be ok with extending long term most.

I would be ok with Hanifin for Scheifele.

I'm still not sure what the rush is to trade him. He's young, he's good, if he wants an extension give him one.

Apparently Hanafin, Lindholm snd Backlund are the three who said they would not return if Sutter is coach.

They’re the most likely to be moved in any event.

Strange days.

What’s the extension look like?

8x$7.5M?

8x$8M?

When you go look at Seth Jones, Darnell Nurse, and Zach Werenski’s contracts it’s hard not to view Noah as a comparable - especially when you’re also looking at a big salary cap increase in year 1 of Noah’s next contract. Noah is going to be a young UFA at 27 years old, his next contract will be massive.

Dude may want be after $65-$70M in total value, and I don’t think that’s out of whack…I do wonder if the Flames should be the team committing that though.

I'm no longer attached to anyone on this team.

If Conroy truly wants and has the go ahead to retool, any pending UFA should be shopped. Lindholm, Hanafin, Toffoli, Zadorov, Tanev.

Shop them and gather assets.

One issue I see is that a couple of those guys could potentially fetch more at the trade deadline, but the Flames don't want to put themselves in tbe position of being in playoff contention and wanting to hang on tomtheir UFAs.

Only guy I'd hesitate on is Hanifin purely because of age. He's young enough that he could be a true stud on Defense when the retool is complete.

I think I had heard somewhere that Toffoli likes it here and may be open to staying, which I find interesting because I seem to remember his wife really liked Montreal and didn't want to leave.

From an asset management perspective it makes no sense to keep Toffoli, but I can't help but like guys who like it here.

This...goal should be to retain younger players. Can't have a core of thirty-somethings, especially when you are not a contender
