Icon38 Flyers to hire Keith Jones as PoHO

https://www.inquirer.com/flyers/flye...-20230510.html

Quote:
Two months after firing former general manager and president of hockey operations Chuck Fletcher, the Flyers have found their next president of hockey operations.

The Flyers are set to hire former player Keith Jones to the role, a source confirmed to The Inquirer Wednesday. Former Flyers defenseman Chris Therien, who now co-hosts the Snow The Goalie podcast, broke the initial news on Twitter after multiple reports on Wednesday stated that Jones was a finalist for the position.

Jones, 54, most recently served as the Flyers’ color analyst on NBC Sports Philadelphia and previously played for the team from 1998-2001. He suited up in the NHL for a total of nine seasons before transitioning to a career in radio and television, which included co-hosting 94.1 WIP’s morning show.

A native of Brantford, Ontario, Jones played four seasons at Western Michigan University from 1988-1992 and was selected No. 141 overall by the Washington Capitals in 1988. He played a total of 491 NHL games with three different teams, including the Flyers, the Capitals (1992-96), and the Colorado Avalanche (1996-99). Jones collected 117 goals and 141 assists for 258 points over the course of his career.

Oh god. He's decently well spoken but is that good enough these days to butter up the higher ups in an organization? What management experience does he have? The old boys club never disappoints.

Professional sports in general as we just saw a TV guy in the NFL hired as interim head coach midseason, who's only coaching experience was high school football. Rich owners continue to run their professional sports teams completely opposite to the businesses that made them rich.

Sounds like an non-traditional POHO role where he basically acts as a spokesperson? Weird.

Watch him go and turn the franchise around. He's a pretty sharp guy. I suspect that some of the comments in this thread will not age well.

This means there's hope for Rhett's AI letter to be Flames GM.

The problem they may run into is that both Keith and Briere are pretty green at their positions. I think it would have been more ideal for Keith to hire a GM with past GM or AGM experience. I don't really have any issue with fresh ideas and perspectives being introduced to the league but this is the Flyers we are talking about so it could go south pretty easily. Say what you want about Conny but he's got miles more experience than both of these men in regards to running a franchise.

Haha, fair point. They do not have a strong track record of smart ownership/management decisions.

Hopefully ownership lets them do their thing without meddling or setting unrealistic expectations of winning now. I'm kind of pulling for them as I think the league is better when the Flyers are good.

Given the current roster state yes but it's a good US hockey market and I just feel it makes the league more interesting when they have a good team.
