We got to witness a legendary coach in action twice and unsurprisingly he was at the wheel for our 2 best years since the 80s.
He felt like he owed us something, but he's the one who brought his grinding work ethic and tireless hockey obsession to the rink each day.
His commitment to the city, organization and family will be long remembered. He is firmly placed on my flames mt Rushmore and I know I'm not alone.
Very few coaches end on a high note, but even with all the 50 odd things that went against the flames this year, the team still never quit and went down to the end. Hope to see him and Chris around the dome.
Thanks Darryl!

The press conferences were one of my favorite parts of having Sutter as a coach. I'll miss those. Post-games are basically always a waste of time to listen to in hockey, but not with Darryl.
I enjoyed having him as the coach. I accept that it was his time to go, but he's the first Flames coach since Hartley that I really liked. He's also the last one before Hartley that I really liked. It's sad that his time with the Flames ends again without a championship.

Thank you Darryl. You are a Calgary Flames legend. I suspect this thread will not get too much love right now, but hey, us Flames fans are tired and worn out at the moment. You gave a lot to this team and it's unfortunate it ended this way, but you brought us lots of great memories, quotes, and you sure as #### cared about the Flaming C.

Darryl has always been my favourite Flames coach and I’m sad to see him go. He’s a genuine person and brought so much credibility back to the organization along with Ken King. I will be forever thankful to him and the service to the organization. Personally the firing doesn’t sit well with me as I think this group of players lacks drive and character (but that’s for a different thread). Going to miss Chris Sutter at the dome as he was the bright spot during a tough season. Best wishes to Darryl and Chris and once again the organization is better for having him as a Calgary Flame.

Well said! Agree with every word.
Thank you, Darryl. Enjoy your $8M and take it easy on the farm.

I was so pumped when he came back and I thought he was the exact coach we needed. I was surprised and disappointed he couldn’t turn the team around that year but it was a throw away season anyway with the weird Canadian division. The next season was something special. We could say with confidence that the Flames were elite in the regular season they scored goals, had top tier goaltending and potential to be good for a while.
When the 2 stars left there was just too much change and the pressure with the new pieces that didn’t fit just didn’t work. I wish he could have finished the business he came back for. It was so frustrating they couldn’t hold onto the 2 goal leads in game 2 and 5 or complete the comeback in game 4 against the Oilers. Even if they lost to the Avs last year beating Edmonton would have cemented his legacy here.

Prior to Darryl's arrival in 2002, this franchise was an embarrassment, resigned to being a mediocre club that was content to miss the playoffs year after year. The dome could draw crowds of 14,000 on a typical game day, the nose bleed seats had to be closed in order to get NHL subsidies, and ticket drives were required to keep this franchise within the city.
Sutter rebuilt this franchise. He changed the loser culture, built an identity based on western Canadian hockey, overhauled the team's abysmal scouting division and built a team the city could be proud of.
In his full four seasons as head coach he delivered two division titles, three playoff appearances, two seconds round appearances, one conference finals appearance and one cup final appearance. As a GM he built three cup contending iterations (03-04, 05-06, and 09-10) without relying tanking for top-5 draft picks, retained all the clubs core players through their prime years, and attracted sought after UFAs to this small market franchise.
Best of luck Darryl. Thank you for the memories.

I know he probably wouldn’t do well but I wish Sutter would go into politics. Even if just for the entertainment.
He seems like a great leader. Straight shooter. Hard worker. Loyal.
Just an all around good person. It’s too bad this year’s results are what he has to go out on. Also too bad that it seems he has to wear the goat horns for it.
