Quote:
Andrei Michkov, the father of top NHL Draft prospect Matvei Michkov, has passed away at the age of 51.
According to the official Russian hockey Twitter, Andrei Michkov’s death came under “unexplained circumstances.” He was reported missing earlier on Tuesday, with an emergency alert saying he was missing as of April 2.
Match TV reported that Andrei Michkov left the home he rented with his son on Sunday night, saying the words, “I’ll be right back.”
A report from Russian outlet IZ.ru said Michkov’s body was found in a pond near Sochi, where his son had spent the second half of the 2022-23 season.

From a hockey perspective, maybe the second best prospect in the draft.
Would you draft him though, if you had one of the top 3-5 picks?
I'd be staying clear, personally.

You draft him and work your tail off to get him tf out of there.

Depends where you think you're at with your rebuild. A team like Arizona, I'd draft him 2nd overall. They have so many picks in the next few years, they're not winning anytime soon and they're in that tiny arena for the next 3-5 years anyway. It would probably be to their advantage to bring in a guy like Michnov in the 26-27 season after his Russian contract expires. At that point, their other high-end picks will be close to done their entry-level deals so the ability to bring in a player of that calibre on an entry-level contract would be huge.

I feel bad for the kid regardless of the circumstances. Maybe it's one of those random things but if his dad was connected in any way to Russian organized crime I would pass on taking him with a top 5 pick.

Malkin had to be smuggled out at a time when it was a lot easier. At least he was able to leave the country. Going in to get a player...that probably will never happen.

Heart goes out to the family. I couldn’t imagine the impact of losing a parent unexpectedly at such a young age. I was 34 when my Dad passed away, and while the effects have not been so visible on a day to day aspect, it’s certainly affected me on a macro level that wasn’t so apparent. As I look back, it changed perspectives on a lot of life. Pride makes you think life goes on and you’re fine, when the impact below the surface alters your approach to relationships and work, even while not realizing it at the time.
Michkov is developing into one of the more risky early picks I can remember, especially in a deep draft. The war and geopolitical environment, his contract in the KHL, and now how he reacts to the death of his father. Wonder if he slides down the rankings to a bubble team who might be more okay with waiting than one of the rebuilding teams who have other choices of great players in the early first round.

I lost my mother when I was the same age (18), though clearly not in a violent/suspicious fashion.
Your perspective, priorities, personality ... and probably a few more P words change instantly and are never the same.

A lot of pressure in Russia for players to stay in the KHL. Ivan fedotov was supposed to be the flyers backup this season, and instead was drugged and sent to a remote military base in the Baltic to serve.

And people question why Russian players are skeptical about denouncing Putin/Russia and Pride Jerseys etc.

This may have gotten lost in the clutter further down the page, but coincidentally this was part of the game report from 1991 that I posted the other day.
