Default Alberta to bid for 2030 Commonwealth Games?

Wonder if this could be a path forward to replacing McMahon ... Livewire reporting Alberta community leaders are exploring a Commonwealth Games bid involving Calgary, Edmonton, and First Nations communities. Suggests 7 Chiefs could be a potential venue.

I’ve also seen chatter about the IOC wanting to move to a rotating host schedule for the Winter Olympics, as they continue to struggle to find willing hosts.

A Calgary or Calgary/Vancouver split bid should be all over that.

That could help with a McMAhon replacement too.

Calgary should set itself up to be a perpetual host for the Winter Olympics. We are a perfect city.

The problem is the games are barely break even just on opex. So the benefit of hosting the Olympics becomes the tourism push vs the ongoing costs of maintaining facilities.

I do agree if you could get every 3rd for 36 years split between Van and Calgary you might make a compelling case.

Commonwealth games are junk. How about if we want to fix McMahon we fix McMahon and avoid the boondoggle.

If McMahon gets replaced, should we call the new one Commonwealth Stadium?

Whenever the Commonwealth Games are mentioned all I can think of is this hilariously horrible piece of public art that was installed for the Gold Coast games in 2018. Spells out "Gold Coast" but is just a blur of lights as you drive past at 110. Cost over $2M to build and is currently still in place as the local council argues over the price to move. I always have a hearty chuckle when driving by.

Same here.

Commonwealth Games make a bit of sense as a practice run for the summer Olympics.

Why can't the Olympics be done for cheaper?

Why are the security costs what they are? I refuse to believe until anyone provides any type of detail as to what and why security costs are what they are; that they are all that fundamental to the operation of the Olympics. At the end of the day it is a sporting event.

It's so weird how people are just like 'well this is what it costs' and literally nobody asks how / why?

If you're building new structures, do they all have to be "top of the line"?

But Calgary is the perfect city for winter sports, regardless of Olympic hosting. It should be the hub for all of Canadas skiers, skaters, bobsledders etc.

Calgary should routinely host all types of winter events that the Olympics just becomes easy.

Build the facilities here and they will get used.

Commonwealth games are meh, and the older I get the less interested I am in events like the Olympics.

I would rather watch the World Championships of most sports.

Off the top of my head:
-Munich olympics
-Route 91 Harvest Music festival
-Manchester arena bombing
-Boston Marathon bombing

there are literally thousands of events that people gather at around the world. Concerts, sporting events, on and on and on. So many places, times and events that thousands of people gather.

Do all of these events have security costs into the billions upon billions? No? Why not?

If the freaking blue ring costs half a mil, these lights at $2M is a bargain
