Weird trade but could work out well for the Blues.

Good trade by Yzerman getting out from the final year of that contract.

Flexibility for the Wings getting out of 50% of Varna’s contract. The Blues make a bet on a useful player when right.

Speculation was Wings were going to buyout Vrana this summer if they couldn't find a taker, so retaining 50% makes sense for them instead of the dead cap hit over 2 years.

will be interesting to see what the Blues get for Vrana and Kapanen in a year's time.

Basically two waiver players they are hoping can get them assets

Smart moves by the Blues, no doubt.

His play had fallen off a cliff, great move by SteveY yet again.
Wish we could have an Yzerman run our train wreck.

Too bad. Wanted Vrana, we need guys like him. And he could still be flipped next year.

I like Yzerman plenty, but I think he takes a loss on this one by trading Mantha for this guy with very little else to show for, and by signing him to the current boat anchor contract.

Does he take the loss?
Mantha has 9 goals and 29 points this year.
With a cap hit of 5.7M

Seems more like a lose-lose.

Didn't he interview here before he went to Tampa?

Fun fact:

Vrana scored 22 goals in 42gp with DET
Mantha scored 22 goals in 117gp with WAS (incl. 11 playoff games where he scored 0)

DET also got a 1st+2nd out of that deal.

I am not saying it was a great deal by Washington, but ultimately the bet on Vrana failed. It happens.
