I assume they will flip him with salary retained. Will be interesting how well they do here.

Making room to offer a contract to DeBrincat? So they can move him if he doesn't accept?

Pretty clearly a salary dump move by the Sens

Chicago did well in this trade. Ottawa 2nd is a top 40 pick.

If they retain salary they should be able to get something for Zaitsev by trade deadline next year.

That 2nd rounder is a solid asset. Nice job Hawks.

Treliving got absolutely owned on the Monahan trade when you look at the Sens dumping more than a year of a worse player for a 2nd

Different time, and especially different no trade list.

Monahan was also coming off major hip surgery so there was no guarantee that he’d be much of a contributor.

Rough Math is Chicago is paying close to $5 million in actual $ for Zaitsev.

Habs will pay close to $6 million for Monahan

Players have the same clause in their contract. This is not a pending UFA Zaitsev he has another year on his deal which is more than what the Habs has to take for Monahan.

I would rather trade for a player that had some injuries but when not hurt was a top player vs an overpaid bottom pairing Dman.

You can't compare what was available in the summer when teams can't go over 10% of the cap to which trades are available 6 months later.

Players have different no trade provisions.

We really don’t know what teams were available in each situation.
