Solid return for Ottawa.

Gauthier is a comparable player but Motte is better defensively.

Deepest draft in almost 2 decades, having as much draft capital is huge this year.

I love how the Sens are being built- big, fast, and heavy.

They just need a better head coach. Smith IMO isn't getting enough results out of that roster.

IMO the Sens re-build will fail for the same reason so many before have: not enough truly elite talent. A lot of really good pieces, but a lack of really elite talent.

Really, they should grab Bruce this off-season.

Stutzle is on pace for over 93 points and is 21 years old, and is signed for 8 years at what is now a bargain contract.

If that is not how you spell elite, you need a new dictionary.

I agree, bit of a lack of game-breaking talent. They could use an upgrade on their backend too- little sparse after Chabot and Sanderson.

Stutzle is elite, he just needs to add about 10 pounds. Suspect he will be a 100 point guy in the next couple years. Brady is pretty good too.

Sens also missing their 2017 1st rounder Josh Norris, who scored 35 goals in 66 games last season but has been injured almost all of this season.

I still think the Sens are set up nicely.

30th in league scoring
A front line player to be sure but not elite
And if he’s their best player does that smell like a championship team?

What do you mean by fail? If it’s not winning a cup thats a pretty high standard. If they go on a run of playoffs for 5-6 years I’d say thats a win.

Still only 21, give the kid a break.
Will all the pieces line up having good years together?

Still need a good team, but you need your bottom players to be better (too players will always do their thing)

Try 25th in league scoring and he's TWENTY ONE. He's pacing to be elite. He's top 5 in scoring for the current calendar year.

My concern is the other players outside of Stuztle.

Are Norris or Batherson or Tkachuk truly elite guys? I think they're a player short.

Compare them to a team like New Jersey that have two elite guys in Bratt and Hughes, a very high end 2C in Hischier, and some nice complementary young guys like McLeod, Sharangovich and Mercer. And they're even better because they still have guys like Nemec and Luke Hughes in the pipeline.

For a team exiting a rebuild, the prospect pool in Ottawa is not good. I don't see any high end pieces that can come in and supplement the current roster.

Would you swap the Sens forward group for the Flames forward group?

I would

Good question as most re-builds will fail if the evaluation is winning a cup. So that's a fair point.
I think you have to become a contender for an extended period of time, with at least a couple runs to the conference final, and at least one appearance in a final.
But yeah its hard to pinpoint exactly where to draw the line.
