Default If the Flames fired Sutter now...

... Would they make the playoffs this season?

A snowball's chance in hell this happens, but hypothetically, do you think the "new coach effect" would carry them into the playoffs?

Discuss.

Close enough in the standings that if they got the new coach bump, sure.

But does this franchise ever do anything in an expected fashion?

It's not the coach. The players need to do their jobs, wether or not they like him on a personal level, it's about professionalism.

Of course it’s the coach. There is no way the players choose to play this brain dead #### of ring it around the boards and pass it back to the point for low percentage shots. Good lord. Everyone on the bench looks tortured and miserable. Its the tail end of Sutter’s first go round all over again.

It's not happening. Sutter and the ownership are BFFs and you know how much power CSEC has on the Flames.

--- It would be stupid.

Sutter is a great coach who has a a roster of misfits made by Treliving, who has no idea how to construct a team.

I assume he was referencing 2006 (end of the first go round).

Apparently Sutter was coaching like crap that whole season too when they won the division.

It’s always the coach. It’s been the coach every time for the past decade. Has the same person hired most of those coaches? Yes. Is it that person? No.

Have some of these coaches had great seasons? Yes. But, it’s important to remember that whenever coaches here have great seasons it’s because we have such great players that play despite the coach, and whenever coaches here have bad seasons we have such great players that can’t overcome the terribleness of the very same coach.

It’s simple: always blame the coach.

It doesn't have to be one reason or the other. It could always be a little bit of both.

I think the new coach bump would be extra effective on this group tbh because of how miserable things have looked

Are they bold enough? Not sure

I'll tell you what it would look like. It would like like the vast majority of the organization's time, whereby ownership goes to the bargain bin for NHL coaching. Then we'd spend years wanting an actual NHL coach again, instead of the Peters and Ward and Gulutzan experiments. We'll whine about management and ownership ad nauseum and why they don't get an NHL calibre coach.

It's probably not all on the coach, probably not all on the players. Some awful mix of the two that has produced this uninspired season.

However, something isn't working, and outside of a very deep run in the playoffs (provided we get in), I don't see how the same group of players will play for the same coach next season and be better.

What then? Either you move enough players or you move the coach. I can't see any way we move enough players and it wouldn't be the first time the coach has paid the price even if it's not their "fault."

So if that's the move that will come anyways, maybe, just maybe this season could be salvaged by swapping coaches now? Promoting within likely won't help, will need a fresh start with 27 odd games remaining.

I don't know all the names available, but I saw Trotz is not working, someone else had mentioned Brunette (would be interesting), I dunno, maybe we poach more from the Canucks and hire Boudreau? Regardless, if the writing is on the wall anyways, why wait?
