Default Disney Will Animate ESPN Coverage for Disney Channel to Get Kids Into Hockey

This is, um, interesting:

https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/dis...ns-1235522327/
Quote:
“Big City Greens” characters will be seen skating alongside animated versions of the actual NHL players. And while the whole scene might look like a cartoon, the action will follow that of the live contest, thanks to the use of the NHL’s own technology that maps the movements of players and the game puck. Younger viewers will see a scene that looks as if “players have been transported into their world,” says Hanan. ”The ice rink will look like the world of ‘Big City Greens,’ and so will even some of the stores in the background.”

This might be my only chance to get my 2 young girls interested in hockey. I’ve tried everything including bribery to get them to watch nhl games.

Not sure where you are in the world, but there is lots of high quality Female hockey being played in most urban areas in Canada.

Corporate executives with big budgets are so bad at figuring out how to get kids interested in sports. Random YouTubers are way better at it.

If there ain't no Nickelodeon slime for goals like in NFL games, I don't want it.

I love crapping on the NHL because they make it so easy, but this is a good idea. If executed properly, it could hit that demographic well. Them partnering up with Disney makes it a lesser likelihood the league cocks it up.

We do a Come Try in Cochrane in April. We fully gear them up so they can fall and not get hurt, all the on ice coaches and helpers are females. We have had amazing results. We have great success with it. I welcome out of towners once the local girl sign ups slow down.

Why not just go completely AI with predetermined outcomes? Save millions on salaries.

My two daughters never got into hockey either. Didn’t even want to learn to skate

They are both pretty good snowboarders though and my oldest went pretty hard at Motocross for 10 years. Guess it’s not for everyone.

This does look intriguing though

It's a difference of scale. You could do something like this with puck and player data that's accurate to within a few inches or even up to a couple of feet. You'd also be able to get by with updating the data every second or so.

In order to use the tech as a virtual goal judge, you'd need the sensors to know where the puck is precisely in 3D space with millimetre accuracy hundreds, if not thousands of times per second.

You mean exactly like the Hawkeye in soccer? I say it a bit tongue in cheek because the nhl wouldn’t miss out on an opportunity to remove an outcome affecting decision by the officials or Colin Campbell in Toronto, would they?
