Hockey Fan Compass
Hockey Fan Compass.
What is your fan ideology?
Where are you on the quadrant grid? Where do you wish you were? Who are paste eating trolls?
I would call myself a centrist optimistic eye test type. I see the value in analytics, but it's not fun for me to follow.
That said, I have a soft spot for people who use analytics to describe why the Flames are losing.
I think poorly of people who use analytics to describe why the team should be doing better, or will turn a corner soon. The blue quadrant can be the worst at it's extreme, but on average people who use the Eye Test to be Pessimistic are the most annoying to listen to.

I'm all green, eye test pessimistic. I can see what's wrong but don't have the data to back it up. I can see continuously the Flames on a 3-on-2 break and the puck ends up in the corner.

Analytics Optimist: Firmly in the blue because I believe in using data to understand problems or successes, but I am probably close to the line between the blue and yellow box. Not always optimistic, so I'm probably halfway towards the right edge from center.

Analytics centrist. Try to avoid either optimistic or pessimistic bias; let the data guide me to assessments.

It isn't everyone. It is the specific type that say stuff like: "they should be good because of x fancy stat", or t"hey are just really unlucky because of y stat", or "this guy is actually a stud because of (insert obscure stat)".

Depends on the situation, but a lot of times those claims actually do have quite of bit of truth to them.

sometimes green, sometimes yellow (upper green/yellow*). I know what a good flames team looks like, as we have last year for reference, which is still pretty fresh. this one looks less dynamic, and the breakdowns against have inexplicably gotten way worse and more frequent. but sometimes they look like they're trending the right way.
I like it when the analytics back up what I'm seeing
seen too many results go against the underlying numbers in recent times so I can't fully lean into the analytics side
I know many here look at analytics first, and use them as predictive measures for what's to follow on the ice and on the scoreboard
the fact that the Flames continue to remain as unlucky as they are this far in the season has dwindled my trust in their predictive power though
I believe in what I see

3 o'clock - optimistic centrist
actually, 4 o'clock... I am a stats person, and extremely analytical, but hockey stats are mostly garbage and I can't put much weight in them.

This is basically an admission of confirmation bias.
I like it when analytics causes me to challenge what I'm seeing on the ice and take a closer look.

Just to the right of the centre line and right on the horizontal line. I feel like I'd be more on the analytics side if I understood them better.
Optomist v. pessimist? I don't think either really, though I want to be optomistic. I watch the games and react to them. I hope for good things but not so much I'm devastated when they don't happen, but not so little I'm shocked when they do.

Optimistic but split between Analytics & Eye Test.

I’m just a die hard fan and usually error on the side of unabashed and blind optimism until I’m finally told there’s no more hope. Before Conna scored that OT dagger I was still firmly believing a comeback was inevitable in that series. If the refs/league got out of the way on the Coleman goal I think it happens too. I wish I was more analytical as I’m a numbers guy and believe in trends but with my Flames fandom I try to stay as positive as I can until I can’t and then the sky is usually plummeting down lol.
