I wish they would put him on PP2.

Doubt he'd be a tough move at all. What about the deal makes you think this?

I think we’ll have both. Zadorov and Tanevs contracts are done after next season as well.
Add Kylington to round of the top 4.

I agree, Weegar is a better passer than Hanifin. They are not far off in assists but Hanifin has wayyyy more time on the pp than Weegar

Hanifin, purely because of the age difference. I really like Weegar's abilities, especially at denying entries and transitioning the puck, but Hanifin is on par with him in most ways.
Hanifin has 3 inches in height and is 3 years younger than Weegar.

Tanev is the one with the shorter shelf-life. And Zadorov is going to get expensive in his next contract.
Regardless, you need 6 good defensemen. I can never understand why fans have this perpetual desire to move out defensemen.

Weegar for me as well. I just think there will be more to Weegar as he gets fully situated, and that next season is going to be much better for him. It's nothing against Hanifin, but the Andersson - Hanifin pairing just doesn't seem as reliable defensively, especially when the other team has some momentum.

Hanifin. Bigger, younger, currently cheaper, and just a smarter player IMO. Weegar is better at some things for sure, like breaking up plays and shooting, but overall, I think Hanifin has more utility and is less prone to errors.

I think some of it is the strong possibility that USA players want to play at home. Regardless of how things pan out, good chance Hanifin leaves so lets get ahead of the curve for once.

I know the OP is asking about Weegar or Hanifin, but Zadorov is much improved this year and has become part of the offensive rush and threat much more than Hanifin and Weegar are. He is trying to make a case of him in the top 4 if he can continue his growth.

Ideally this would be the ideal top 4 but could we afford them all. Andersson in 2 yrs will be very expensive.

Trade Zadorov + Tanev eventually.
There is absolutely no way the Flames should try and extend a 34/35 year old Tanev unless he is super cheap. Can get a ton for him on the market this off-season though.

I agree but for us Flames fans I'd argue Sutter is a defenseman horse-whisperer. Phaneuf and Doughty thrived under him but not so much after. Gudbranson is another recent example too. I love Tanev and Zadarov but I'd rather let them move on if either wants substantial raises after next year. Tanev is going to be going on 35 for his next contract! Zadarov is one of my recent favorites but I'd much rather move the asset then have to try to sign him for 5+ after next year if he keeps up his strong play. Much rather trade for assets and give Sutter more chances with other diamonds in the rough.

He's probably getting a similar deal as Hampus Lindholm. Somewhere around $7M AAV on a 7-8 year term
