Tell me about Melbourne - Calgarypuck Forums - The Unofficial Calgary Flames Fan Community

So found out my wife got into a grad program in Melbourne with a start date in February. Would be 1 year at Deakin University.

I'd almost certainly stay in Calgary, but we're wondering if anyone here has/does live in Melbourne. We spent a week there in 2019 and liked it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated (costs, bike infrastructure, jobs, safety, etc). Contemplating a roommate, close to Univ. Ideally she'd get a pt job as well pending workload (2 courses and a thesis per semester).

I was at a winery as we were returning to Melbourne from Point Lonsdale. A guy who had overheard us chatting about the city was leaving, and he leaned over and said "Melbourne: Greatest City in the World" and walked off. so there's that!

Melbourne has great bike paths, good public transport and is a stunningly beautiful city. The cost of living is on the high side, but the standard of life is excellent.

My brother has lived there since 2005 and I’ve visited a few times. He’s moved out to Diamond Creek which is a ways out, but he still travels into the Central Business District regularly.

I’ve loved every visit there and we always felt safe.

It is a wonderful city!

I’m in Australia and was going to offer some travel advice. Alas, wrong Melbourne.

Thanks. She's likely going to live around Box Hill / Burwood area to the east of the CBD. It's about a 30m trip into the core but that should be doable. Looks like alot of paths and trams/trains as well so that'll help alot.

We looked at stats etc and seems similar to big city here, maybe more like TO or MTL. When we were there in 2019 I always thought it felt like TO and Sydney was like Vanc.

@MoneyGuy...this is the one in Oz...lol.
