With Freddie Andersen on IR, he's currently Carolina's backup to Anttii Raanta, and has played a total of 7 NHL games in his career (including 4 games this year, he is 2-0-2 with a 2.00 GAA and 0.914).

Not a big contract or a well-known name, but at the risk of saying this is just Carolina doing Carolina things with their goalies, is this a shrewd move or another case of Carolina pinching pennies between the pipes? Are goalies overvalued (or overpaid) in general in the NHL?

Potentially pretty shrewd.

He had great KHL numbers, great AHL numbers, and has been good at the NHL level so far.

Has lots up upside at 23, and if he takes the step people expect of him then you locked in for 4 years at what will be not much more than what a journeyman back up gets ($1.5M)

Spectacular deal. Expect him to be the #1 goalie sooner than later. And with that contract, no reason not to give him a clear chance.

Smart move for the player, as it pretty much guarantees him a real chance to run with some ice time. If he's underpaid for a while, he'll eventually get paid.

Yes, both Andersen and Raanta are UFAs after this year. Andersen currently makes $4.5M, Raanta makes $2.0M.
