Try living out in the country for a while (on a gravel road, specifically)...then see what you think of all the jagged little rocks all over city roads.
I don't mind little chips in the paint if it stops cars from sliding all over the place on the ice.
Well the opposite choice is salt. Out here in the far east they love coating the road with the stuff. Nothing better than driving along and having your entire windshield and vehicle go white with salt...and finding you dont have any windshield cleaner in the reservoir. Ugh.
Would you prefer that your nice, new car get completely smashed up in an accident on an icy road?
It's a necessary evil.
I know. And I usually leave it at home when there's icy roads. Its just that the rocks stay on the roads all winter long, even when the weather is nice.
It could have at least waited until the engine was broken in...
Further to the salt response, try selling a car after 5 winters in the salty east. Paint and windshields can be fixed. A rusty undercarriage is just not repairable.

And then find your chassis is completely rusted in 5 years.
