Flames recall Gilbert. DeSimone assigned to Wranglers
The carousel continues as Sutter looks for a depth D-man to step up

If Valimaki was making less than $1 million, he'd be on the Flames. I guess good on him and his agent. He is making more than minimum and he is playing full time in the NHL right now

I thought DeSimone was fine for a call-up depth guy. I may have liked him more than Mackey in fact.
I think Sutter probably just wants the extra muscle out there.

I like DeSimone's game more than Gilbert's but this isn't a big deal.

With Tanev back the callup is just going to sit, so I guess it's a question of who is better to do that.

He's gotta be next.
DeSimone was only ok, but is probably better for him to play in the AHL than only get 7 minutes of ice per night on the Flames.
Not sure what this means for pairings though.
Gilbert Weegar/Tanev? Zadorov with the other one?
Sutter really likes his lefty righty pairings, Gilbert satisfies that.

I was at the game but I wasn't paying much attention to pairings. Still, it seemed like DeSimone was a benchrider and Tanev just rotated between Zadorov and Weegar. Zadorov was on the ice a lot.

This is a left shot I wonder if we go back to Weegar and Zadorov and Tanev with Mackey or Gilbert.
The minute splits haven't been ideal with 5 guys playing the majority but not much you can do when Mackey has been horrific.

Meloche's cap hit: $950,000
Gilbert/DeSimone: $762,500
IMO that's why we are seeing those guys instead of him.

Pairings, as listed before last game, are:
Hanifin-Andersson
Weegar-Tanev
Zadorov-DeSimone
Mackey
Mackey and Gilbert both shoot left. Sutter probably wants Weegar on the right side since he shoots right.
So we'll see something like
Hanifin - Anderson
Zadorov - Tanev/Weegar
Mackey or Gilbert - Weegar/Tanev
That is likely until Stone comes back, then Weegar will be the likely candidate to move back to his offside.

I thought DeSimone was pretty good in his first game, but has struggled since. Gilbert's first game was also good, but we only have the one game from him, so hard to conclude much. The bottom line is that none of them have been all that great. VERY small sample sizes, but their even strength GA/60 are as follows:
Mackey: 8.3
DeSimone: 7.1
Gilbert: 3.0
Gilbert's sample size is too small to have any meaning. But the other 2 weren't getting it done.

Sooner or later the discussion needs to address the elephant in the room.

I don't believe that is true. He is one of those guys that just desperately needed a change, and there was absolutely nothing I saw from him all last year and through training camp that indicated he was even close to playing on this team. Sometimes, things just don't work out.

Who did Gilbert play with his last game?
I would prefer to see him with Tanev, I think. Mostly because I have really liked Zadorov and Weegar together. Man, Zadorov is playing some really good hockey right now.

None of our business.
We should assume he isn't coming back any time soon though. There's zero indication that he is.
So roster decisions are likely being made with that assumption in mind.

Right, but that is just not going to happen. The team has been crystal clear that Kylington will be left alone until he is ready to come back. There will be no discussion.

Probably should look to make a deal for a LHS D man if that's truly the case.
