Pittsburgh at Calgary

The Flames' strong penalty kill (18-for-21 on the season) has been a big factor in squeezing out these wins. The penalty-kill unit was a perfect 4-for-4 on Saturday, holding steady even during a four-minute Hurricanes power play in the third period, preventing Carolina from scoring a go-ahead goal.

"The penalty kill ... was unbelievable," Calgary goaltender Jacob Markstrom said. "I don't know how many different pairings on forward and (defense) that was out there for the four-minute kill. So that was huge for us, and after that we grabbed the momentum."

Markstrom, who stopped 25 of Carolina's 27 shots, will likely be back in net on Tuesday.

When Calgary Flames head coach Darryl Sutter spoke this summer about teams needing an elite defenceman to win the Stanley Cup, people sort of assumed he might be referring to newcomer MacKenzie Weegar.

On heels of bad loss, Penguins must deal with Flames next

Coming off their first regulation loss of the season, the Pittsburgh Penguins will try to bounce back quickly against another tough opponent when they visit the Calgary Flames on Tuesday.

The 4-1-1 Penguins have scored six goals in each of their four victories, but the offensive tables were turned against them on Monday in a 6-3 loss to the host Edmonton Oilers. After building a 3-1 lead through 22 minutes, Pittsburgh allowed five unanswered goals.

Game Preview: 10.25.22 at CGY

Pittsburgh has historically fared well on its Western Canada swing. Over the last 11 seasons that they've made the trip to Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver dating back to the 2007-08 season, they've gone 21-7-6 which includes a 8-4-4 record over the last six visits.

Pens on 2nd game of a back to back, what are the odds we see Vladar start?

I think we start Markstrom again tonight. I want to see a complete game from him before I mess with his starts ... I think he is starting to work his way out of it. Also, if he didn't start tonight, it would be a long week before starts and I think he needs more work than Vladar right now to get back to form. I am hoping for a complete game!

If the Flames are as prepared as Cheese's gameday threads then success is all but guaranteed.

Penguins allow 1000 shots against per game...Flames need to be patient and limit their chances because they will get their own

Saw a kid at the store yesterday wearing a Crosby jersey. Hopefully that kid goes to bed sad tonight when the Flames win.

Pittsburgh has skill but they are off to a PDO heater.

5 on 5
3rd in shooting percentage
5th in save percentage
2nd in PDO

The Flames?
21st in shooting percentage
24th in save percentage
27th in PDO

All situations
Pittsburgh
6th in shooting
7th in saves
4th PDO

Flames
17th in shooting
25th in saves
23rd PDO

The Carolina games was a step in the wrong direction, but through 5 games the Flames have had success despite having middling to under average finish and goaltending.

Pittsburgh doing both well, but fortunate?

We are close enough to Edmonton to be well acquainted with the phenomenon of media acting like fanboys.

Pens are gonna be an ornery bunch after choking against the Oil. If the Flames can weather the storm early in the 1st, I think we'll be in good shape. Hopefully this is the game where our top line comes alive.
