Default Sump pump running like mad

So we came home from breakfast this morning and found a very fast flow of water into our basement sump pump receptacle. The pump is working as intended but I have no idea when or if to call for assistance. It’s been going for at least a couple hours now. The water meter isn’t indicating any leak in our property and no neighbours have identified any issues on their end. What should I do?

Maybe call 311? Your water line could be leaking before the meter underground, so you wouldn't know it looking at the meter. The city could come shut off your water at the curb to see if that is the source.

Leak upstream of your meter in the buried line perhaps? Ground water to our sumps has pretty much dried up this year, but depends what’s happening with your aquifer? Could just be a shift in flow? Might be worth having the valve at the main closed to see if the flow slows down

This. Hopefully it’s on the city side.

Called 311 and they’re sending a crew. We’ll see what they find I guess. Thanks all.

Turns out the neighbours had a leak. Felt bad breaking the news to them. Ugh.

Hopefully close to the street and no settling issues from the water flow. Not sure what the city rules are, but out here the district is responsible for the repair of the line and backfilling, but the owner is on the hook for replacement of the driveway that gets dug up.

The city is supposed to come back sometime today to do some leak detecting but it seems like the problem is 99% likely on the homeowner side. I guess we'll see what they find but the clean up is well under way now.

In Calgary the dividing line is the service shut-off valve. Anything on the 'house' side of the valve is the homeowner's problem, no matter where exactly the line goes. E.g. if the property is serviced from an alley and runs underneath a detached garage (like my house...), all of that run under the garage and back yard is the homeowner's problem.
