LeBrun reporting Chara to announce his retirement today as well. Surely worthy of its own thread.

EDIT: And there it is.

Happy Defensemen Retirement Day?
I woke up to see three announcements from defencemen retiring. What day do the forwards retire? When did this become things that happen on the same day?

It’s probably not nearly as fun being a fringe player when you’ve been a star, when you’ve made $80M and you have options that will pay you handsomely to not destroy your body further.

It's life imitating art; we have morphed into the EA Sports simulation where retirements all happen together on one screen. As soon as somenoe presses X, we will proceed onto forwards.

Yeah he had a good run in his prime and made a lot of money. He doesn't need to go the PTO route or play for minimum salary especially when he can probably land a cozy TV gig.

IMO he was the most electric and entertaining defencemen in the league in his prime. Combined with his fun personality, I hope we see more players like him in the future.

I bet every one of these guys got a call from the Oilers: "We'd like to sign you on a one year deal to mentor our --" click. Agent: File the retirement papers, as fast as you can!

This retirement is a bit surprising. Would have thought he would have gotten a contract or a PTO and worked his way onto a roster as 5/6. He has had a decent career that started really well in Montreal.

PK has had back injuries for what feels like the past 6 or 7 years. Maybe longer. Probably stretching back to when he got clobbered from behind as a Hab back in 2016 and went head first into the boards. Can't recall against who. Surprised he didn't retire sooner but as mentioned he'll land on his feet with a broadcast job somewhere. Pretty sure he's doing a PK Places for ESPN with Peyton Manning's production company.

PK Subban retires, wow. The wheels really fell off for him a few years ago. I wonder if he had some nagging injury that affected the way he played, he was always working out and trying to stay in shape. He's a natural for the broadcast booth. Say what you want about him, his generosity off the ice will be long remembered.
I remember an article from Scott Hartnell, a bitter rival when they played against one another. He opined that he didn't think they'd get along, even when they were on the same team. He quickly retracted that and said he had a friend for life when they were Predators together.
Happy retirement, PK. You were amazing and frustrating, sometimes on the same night.

As a black person, growing up with Iggy on the Flames and seeing PK in the league made me feel more included into the sport when there were times I felt like an outsider. Slewfooting aside, PK was a great d-man in his prime and he’s a good person off the ice with a great personality. Pretty certain we’re gonna see him as a commentator now which is good

I've always been a big fan of PK because of the person he is. It's hard to find players as wiling to devote his time and money to charitable causes as Subban. The hate for him from some fans and some players was always something that rubbed me the wrong way.

PK had a lot of great career accomplishments, but the main enduring memory I think I'll always have of him is the $10 million donation he raised for the Montreal Children's Hospital.
