Default Recreational Curling in YYC

My wife and I learned to curl last winter and played in a short spring league.

This year, we went looking for a rec. curling league and found it incredibly difficult to find enough information to make a decision on where to play. For club leagues, it was hard to gauge if the leagues would be appropriate for rookies. For associate leagues... well, those were all over the map.

I have come to the CalgaryPuck hive mind with two questions:

1) Do you have any recommendations for recreational/rookie leagues? Location doesn't really matter

2) Do you know of any drop in curling options? (aside from Huntington Hills on Sundays, that's the only one I've found)

We ended up joining a CSSC league for the fall, but I'd like to have some better options for the winter and/or next year.

TIA!

I hope you guys find something. Curling is can be such an enjoyable night out. The wife and I each play in our own leagues as well as together in a couples league. If only you lived down in Lethbridge I’d have all sorts of hookups for you. Good luck in your search.

I curled at Huntington Hills curling club a couple years ago as a beginner. It was part of their rec league which had people of all skill levels. It was really enjoyable.

I had to quit as I hurt my shoulder badly, but still know some people who curl there. I think it has already started, so it would probably be too late to join now, but you might be able to sign up as a spare, as teams often are short people throughout the schedule.

I've curled at Garrison for 6 years now, really like it. It's relaxed, fun and unpretentious.

I highly recommend it. Not sure if there is any room left in any of the Learn to Curls or the Greenhorn leagues. Give them a call and ask, the office is friendly and willing to help.

I think when we were shopping around, their website was still showing last year's offerings and I never went back.

I'll check out the Greenhorn option for winter!

I couldn't find anything that advertised as a rec league there. They had mixed and open. Do you remember if was anything specific? or just one of their open leagues?

Looking at their site, I think it was the Wednesday night open.

https://huntingtonhillscommunity.ca/...ednesday-open/

Not sure what the difference is between a rec league and an open league.

I was invited to join a team of friends who were curlers. You signed up as a team, and a schedule is made up. I think there were A and B groupings (A were more experienced teams, B were all levels. Top team in B gets moved up to A and bottom team in A gets moved down to B the following year). I think if people didn't have a team, they would group you together into a new team (or add you to existing teams).

I think Acadia Rec Center has a curling league they run there. Might be worth checking out if you’re looking for info.

You could try the Springbank Curling club, they have designated Fridays that you can just sign up to curl in. https://springbankcurling.com/

they have a fairly active league and a really good junior program.

Looks like they also have drop in saturdays once a month!
Thanks!
